The boards and text block otherwise clean and fresh. The dust jacket very good with chipping to the spine tips and corners toning to the spine panel and margins of the flaps a soft crease to the corner of the lower flap a small hole at the upper panel hinge and a short tear to the head. Steinbeck's account of the itinerant ranch hands George and Lennie was issued in New York by Covici-Friede early in 1937; this Heinemann edition the first to appear in Britain carries decorations by Michael Rothenstein throughout. Steinbeck's own dramatisation opened on Broadway that November and was awarded the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play the following spring; the 1939 film directed by Lewis Milestone and starring Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney Jr. received four Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. The novel's closing episode in which George kills Lennie to spare him a crueler death at the hands of others - echoing an earlier scene in which an ageing dog is shot by a fellow ranch hand - has been discussed by critics and educators as an early and enduring literary treatment of mercy killing; it is cited among the grounds on which the American Library Association records it as one of the most frequently challenged texts in American schools and libraries. 1937rif. 152672New York: Covici-Friede 1937. First edition of the dramatic version of Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men wittily inscribed by him. Octavo original publisher's cloth. Lengthily signed by the author and also initialed on the half-title “by an author in 1 Act. John Steinbeck a walking mouse who dances from man to mouse J.S.” Steinbeck adapted his celebrated 1937 novel for the stage the same year and the play opened on Broadway that November. From the library of Otis L. Guernsey Jr. 1918-2001 the distinguished American drama and film critic and for more than three decades editor of the Best Plays theatre yearbook. Guernsey spent nineteen years at the New York Herald Tribune rising from copy boy to become the paper’s film and drama critic and arts editor before taking over the Best Plays series in 1964 and editing some thirty-six annual volumes an unrivaled record of the American stage. As one of the foremost theatre critics of his generation he moved in the same New York literary and theatrical world in which Steinbeck whose novels and plays were mainstays of stage and screen loomed so large. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco and folding chemise slipcase. A wonderful signed and playfully inscribed copy. Of Mice and Men the tragic story of the migrant ranch hands George and the gentle giant Lennie and their doomed dream of a place of their own is among the most widely read and taught works in American literature. John Steinbeck adapted his 1937 novel into a play the same year and the stage version won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for the 1937-1938 season. Steinbeck 1902-1968 went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for The Grapes of Wrath in 1940 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962 and Of Mice and Men has been filmed several times notably in 1939 with Lon Chaney Jr. and Burgess Meredith and in 1992 with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich. 1937rif. 100479New York: Covici-Friede 1937. First edition. Near fine in a price-clipped good or better dustwrapper with some chipping near the bottom of the front flap fold and a large but faint dampstain. An uncommon play adapted by Steinbeck from his own novel. Steinbeck's stage adaptation condenses his novella into a three-act tragedy ideally suited to theatrical presentation. The play's dialogue-driven format strips away narrative contemplation rendering each character's thwarted ambitions through stark unadorned exchanges that intensify the work's central themes: the impossibility of economic independence during the Depression the profound isolation persisting within communal spaces and the brutal incompatibility between human vulnerability and a system demanding complete self-sufficiency. The inexorable march toward Lennie's death demonstrates how certain lives become expendable when they cannot conform to society's demands. Covici-Friede unknown

One of just 2500 copies printed in the first issue given by the author to his beloved older sister whom he held up as a model of integrity in the dedication to Winter of Our Discontent: "To Beth my sister whose light burns clear." Steinbeck was satisfied with his novella about the struggles of two itinerant farm workers but he didn't expect the book to make any money. It ended up selling 117000 copies in less than a month. The story was originally intended for children and The Times called it a "fairy tale" in its review. The novella is now assigned to grade school students across the country as their first introduction to Steinbeck. Covici Friede unknown
