The centennial of Madama Butterfly provides the occasion for re-considering Puccini?s ?Japanese tragedy? within the framework of European exoticism. Contributions examine the historical context and fin de si?cle orientalism, approach the score from points of view ranging from musical analysis and questions of genre to the representation of religion, discuss Puccini?s revisions and criteria for a critical edition, and consider the opera?s reception in popular music and film. 746 gr. viii-414 p.
