1889rif. A2830139 pages. Duodecimo 5 3/4" x 3 3/4" bound in original publisher's quarter red cloth over stiff boards lettered in black. Second edition. "Yacuic iyec tenonotzaltzin in Jesu‑Christo quenami oquimo ihcuilhuili in San Lucas" is a 19th‑century Nahuatl translation of the Gospel of Luke by Mariano Paz y Sánchez first published 1833 historically significant for its role in spreading Christianity among Indigenous communities in Mexico. The title translates roughly to "The word of the Lord the good news of Jesus Christ as it is told in Luke". Written in Classical Nahuatl the language of the Aztec people making it accessible to Indigenous speakers in the 19th century. The purpose of the work was to make Christian teachings understandable to Indigenous communities reflecting the missionary and educational efforts of the Catholic Church in colonial and post‑colonial Mexico. It is a rare example of early intercultural religious transmission combining European biblical text with Indigenous linguistic and cultural frameworks The translator Mariano Paz y Sánchez was a 19th‑century linguist known for producing early Nahuatl versions of the Bible. El Evangelio de S. Lucas 1833 — Published in London by Samuel Bagster this work presents the Gospel of Luke entirely in Nahuatl with the title page in Spanish It was translated from the Vulgate and is part of the British and Foreign Bible Society's historical catalog no. 6776. Paz y Sánchez's work reflects the broader 19th‑century effort to translate the Bible into Indigenous languages of the Americas often in collaboration with missionaries and linguists. His Nahuatl versions were part of a tradition of "Indian linguistics" and religious literature that sought to preserve and disseminate sacred texts in native tongues. Condition: Edge wear with bumped corners. Top edge of page 5/6 has been torn away not affecting text. Some soling and fading of covers else good. Imprenta evangelica hardcover
