1875Best.-Nr. 5808France: S.P. C1875. First edition. A beautiful devotional illuminated manuscript. Likely a first Holy Communion gift or similar. Undated but circa 1875. The text is the Memorare / Oraison de Saint Bernard. This was a prayer to the Virgin Mary wrongly attributed for many years to St Bernard. In fact it was by Nicolas Salicetus. High quality stiff art paper. Now a little marked. To the verso are the remnants of when the sheet was tipped onto a stiff card backing for framing. The illuminated portion is clean and tidy. Text in French. The heraldic device C.M. to the bottom is almost certainly the artist. The painted area is 16cm x 12cm. The sheet is 26.5cm x 22cm. Blank to verso. The manuscript is in the style of Gothic/Troubadour Revival illumination which was popular in the second half of the nineteenth century. S.P. unknown

1800Best.-Nr. 8001800. Stipple engraving. 190mm by115mm sheet. Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon 1747-1825 was a French artist writer and archaeologist. He had a brilliant career as artist and diplomat under the ancien regime and followed Napoleon on his campaign in Egypt. In 1804 he became director-general of museums and was instrumental in bringing foreign masterpieces into the Louvre as the spoils of conquest. His accounts of his travels and his treatise on ancient monuments contain collections of his engravings of works of art. Denon was partly responsible for the design of the Vend_me Column a monument to Napoleon. Light horizontal crease across image looks as if from original printing - it doesn't come up in the photo. unknown
181012mo., with an engraved frontispiece by Armstrong and engraved title-vignette by Mitan (both after Cooke), frontispiece and title mildly foxed, neat contemporary initials and date on title, title wanting top outer corner, some light marginal age-staining to text; most attractively bound in early nineteenth-century full calf, sides with double gilt frame border enclosing a well-proportioned Greek key border all in gilt, neatly rebacked in calf gilt to style, gilt doublures, marbled endpapers, marbled edges, a very good, crisp copy of a scarce issue. With the large mid-nineteenth century bookplate of Reginald Dolley on paste-downs. The letters of 'Junius' were written to the 'London Public Advertiser' between 1769 and 1772 as part of a concerted and venomous attack on the government of the Duke of Grafton in favour of the return of the Earl of Chatham. Following numerous pirated and incomplete editions, the first authorised version appeared in 1772 and was an immediate success. The letters were regarded as models of neo-classical style (they were praised by both Burke and Johnson) and have been many times reprinted. Their authorship remains a major literary enigma of eighteenth century English literature. Harvey (OCEL) and CBEL favour Sir Philip Francis (the case would appear a strong one) but there are at least forty other nominees including figures as diverse as Burke, Gibbon, Temple, Tooke and Walpole. A SCARCE ISSUE IN WELL-PRESERVED PERIOD BINDING
