1825ref. 5799Paris: Mme Ve J. Decle & Renard 1825. Reprint. Originally issued in 1796 this work shows the depreciation of the revolutionary currency in France from the execution of the king by the new regime. Leather binding with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. Marbled boards. Overall in very good condition with a little nicking to the head of the spine. Internally clean and tidy throughout with a touch of darkening to the pages only. 306 i pages with errata to the rear. 130 by 90mm 5 by 3½ inches. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 716024096. The new Republic issued "Assignats" or paper money nominally backed by confiscated church and national lands. These were massively over-printed through the early 1790s and collapsed into catastrophic hyperinflation. The Directory tried various solutions but had to abolish these and revert to metallic coin in 1797. This document was essential for the courts to establish what the currency was worth in a given department on a given date. A primary-source document for understanding the mechanics of the assignat collapse. .
1880ref. 5438France: S.P. C1880. First edition. An attractive original albumen photograph of the château de Chenonceau. Good clean attractive print. Laid onto a grey paper background with title to the bottom edge. The grey paper has a little nicking and chipping to the edges. The print is in excellent condition. The photograph is 25cm x 36.5cm. The sheet is 30cm x 41.5cm. The Château de Chenonceau often called the "Ladies' Château" is a stunning 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece in France's Loire Valley uniquely spanning the River Cher on a bridge-like structure. Built primarily between 1514 and 1522 by Thomas Bohier and his wife Catherine Briçonnet it replaced an earlier medieval fortress. It is called the Ladies Château as successive women shaped its legacy including Diane de Poitiers who added the river-spanning bridge 1556–1559 and created extensive gardens and Catherine de Médicis who built the grand gallery 1570–1576. .
