1835rif. 26036New York City ca1835. Not bound. Very good. A unique conté crayon ink and watercolor rendering 98 x 140 mm of the prison from Manhattan Island. A dream-like rendering of the prison in an arcadian setting adorned with a flight of birds over the prison in finely delineated ink outline. Alas there is no back story to add. It is however an unsual subject. The perspective if correct is across the East River from Kips Bay. Please note that the color temperatures are to the blue in the scan offered here. New York City purchased the East River island in 1828. In 1832 a penitentiary was built on the island. This physically isolated prisoners from the city and from the mainland. However prisoners were not the only inmates on Blackwells Island. Nineteenth century Blackwells Island was also home to a complex of workhouses a general hospital an almshouse a hospital for incurables the insane and for a time a smallpox hospital. The watercolor offered here appears to duplicate a "view" issued by the Peabody Co. in their Views in New York . 1830-1834. books

Good; some wear to the spine; paper flaw to the lower corner of p. 200 - no loss. 8vo xxxvi 444 liii pp. An astonishing anthology assembled by instructors at the Leipzig Bürgerschule. 1894rif. GEN34-H-13London : Macmillan & Co. 1894. Cloth. Near Fine. 10.5" by 7.5". None. A limited edition late 19th century collection of light-hearted poetry illustrated by Hugh Thomson and with an introduction by Austin Dobson As part of the first edition one hundred and fifty copies of this large paper edition were printed. The poetry consists of short vignettes often on country characters or pursuits. 'Coridon' is a reference to a stock character of ancient pastoral poetry; characters of that name appear in both Theocritus and of course the Eclogues of Virgil. Hugh Thompson's style reflected the nostalgia of the time his fine line drawing of rural characters and gentle countrified society appealing to the imagination of the public. He worked on two books for his friend the poet Austin Dobson The Ballad of Beau Brocade 1892 and The Story of Rosina 1895. This collection represents a further collaboration. Though it is unclear the author is most likely Dobson Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD 1906-1973 a noted book collector and diarist. In the original cloth with a spine label. Externally excellent with just a little fading towards the edges of the boards and to the spine. With a shelf label to the front pastedown. The text block is untrimmed but the edges remain reasonably clean. The pastedowns and endpapers are lightly foxed but internally clean and bright throughout and firmly bound.
