1919réf. 69California: Unpublished 1919-1922. Hardcover. Good. Hardcover scrap book with hand written paper label to front and spine. 10 1/2" by 8" by 3". Consists of 120 leaves with an almost complete run of weekly newspaper articles relating to local oil leases and associated news from Oct 1919 to Jan 1922 clipped from the Huntington Beach News and pasted into a scrap book. Newspaper evenly tanned. Book fully intact with a little toning and wear to edges. A detailed record of the early days of oil production in Southern California. On May 24 1920 the first Huntington Beach well the Huntington A-1 was brought in as a producing well. By October 1921 the field had 59 producing wells. Even with 16 of those 59 wells being idle the field produced 16500 barrels of oil equivalent 101000GJ per day with each well producing from 50 to 200 barrels daily. The conflict of coastal oil drilling with beachfront recreation and tourism has been a central theme in Southern California politics. The discovery of oil was followed by a real estate boom in the surrounding communities. For example as the Huntington Beach Oil Field expanded the homes in that area that stood in the path of drawing oil from the ground were physically relocated north 6 miles in 1921-1922 to lots in Midway City California which "started Midway City". In addition the discovery led to the development of the oceanfront community of Sunset Beach California which was established in 1905. Unpublished hardcover

réf. 80649N.p. n.d. s.i. Octavo 23cm. Printed buff wrappers; 32pp all halftone photographic reproductions. Mild external creasing and soil; pencil note to front cover "from Leslie / Sept 11th 1932"; another faint pencil annotation to rear wrapper indecipherable; else clean and unmarked Very Good. Reproduces thirty official U.S. War Department and Signal Corps photographs all being battlefield photos of atrocities from the European theatre in WW1. Most are extremely graphic images of dead and mutilated soldiers the only text being brief captions providing sardonic commentary: "Abandoned;" "Decapitated;" "Asphyxiated;" "Where Children Played;" "The Price They Paid" etc. Issued without date or attribution nor has our research uncovered any definitive bibliographical data but the pamphlet was clearly intended to generate anti-war sentiment. Date uncertain; most OCLC records suggest a 1920s date but we suspect the pamphlet was issued later probably around the penciled date on front cover to discourage further American entanglements in the European conflict then just predictable on the far horizon. unknown

1971réf. 12430Quebec 1971. An open letter beginning "Dear Sisters" from Quebecois feminists explaining the relationship between feminism and the FLQ. Written after the invocation of the War Measures Act in Oct. 1970 following the kidnapping and execution of Minister of Labour Pierre LaPorte and the kidnapping of British Trade Commissioner James Cross the letter details the state oppression of FLQ activists before vaguely tying it in with the oppression of women. The authors conclude by declaring "we will never cease in confronting male chauvinism although we are not sure to what extent members of the FLQ are aware of the oppression of women." Half FLQ support appeal half second wave feminist declaration a scarce document tying together two Quebecois liberation movements. We were unable to determine who the authors or recipients were although we acquired it with a collection of material from the Marxlist-Leninist Red Women's Detachment so it's likely they distributed it in NYC's Maoist circles during the early 1970s. Two corner-stapled pink sheets printed from typescript on rectos only. Faint offsetting around the edges but about Near Fine. We were unable to locate a record for this document in OCLC. Scarce. unknown
