1859rif. 5474London: N.P. 1859. First edition. An attractive but difficult to trace collection of children's lithographic ABC / Chapbooks from 1859. There are no publisher details and no titles to any of the works. The whole is made up of seven separate children's books. There are a total of 58 leaves in the work. The majority of these are printed in colour chromolithographic plates to one side only seven of the leaves are coloured text and printed on both sides which give us a total of 65 printed pages. Six of the seven are complete and one appears to lack two leaves. The seven works are as follows: 1 Animal ABC. Seven leaves with illustrations of animals and large letters below. 2 Animal ABC. Five leaves with four animals and text to each leaf. There are only A-P present so we suspect is missing two leaves. 3 Animal poems. Eight leaves with a large picture and a short verse. Numbered 1-8. 4 The naughty Chicken. A moral tale for children with a large picture and verses below in a red decorated frame. In typical Victorian style the naughty chicken is condemned to death by the court in London and is executed. The last plate appears to show the chicken being eaten! It is this tale which gave us the date for the volume as it illustrates the Penal Laws of London 1859. Eight numbered leaves. 5 Old mother Hubbard. Eight numbered leaves with a large picture title above and verse below. 6 Nursery Rhymes. There are seven leaves of chromo-lithographs quite a few to each page alternating with seveb leaves of text. The text leaves are printed to both sides so 14 pages Including a double page ABC. 7 Who killed Cock Robin. Seven leaves of colour lithograph with verses beneath. The whole is bound in a gilt and blind stamped decorated cover. A little rubbed and bumped. The spine appears to have been restored. The pages inside are in slightly darkened and foxed condition. Some small archival repairs to some page edges and reinforcement of the end papers. A fascinating collection. 25.5cm x 19cm. . Numérotées de 1 à 8. 4 The naughty Chicken. 5 Old mother Hubbard. 255 cm x 19 cm. N.P. unknown

1819rif. 5248London: Baldwyn & Co. Newgate Street 1819. First edition. Contemporary hand colouring. Satirical depiction of a man on a chair reading in front of the fireplace. On the table beside him on the mantel and scattered on the floor are books. Those scattered are important and educational such as Newton and other scientific treatise. We have seen archival references that this print is known as "The Half-Wit. wasting his time on a poor choice of reading material." The implication is that he is wasting his time in his reading material. Below the title is printed "Luctantar paucae comedunt coliphia paucae." This is a paraphrase of a line in Juvenal's satires which means few fight and few reap the reward. Presumably a comment on the importance of learning. We can find no other copiesof this item currently for sale. The sheet has been pasted onto a backing board and at some point in a frame. The edges are slightly nicked where removed from the frame. The sheet is mainly clean but the page a little darkened. Image is 15cm x 13cm. Sheet is 27cm x 21cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 701901036. The only library holding is in the Yale University Lewis Walpole Library. . L'image mesure 15 cm x 13 cm. La feuille mesure 27 cm x 21 cm. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 701901036. 1885rif. 5259Paris: A. Quantin 1885. First edition. A decent copy of this beautifully illustrated work. Numbered one of only 200 copies. #52. Original soft covers with text and heraldic device to the covers. These are sound but somewhat darkened. Some light marking and a little nicking to the head and tail of the spine. Internally the pages are clean and neat and complete with a touch of darkening to the page edges. The sewn binding is very loose - just holding the book together particularly to the first gather. Would benefit from restoration. All 25 plates are present and in good condition. Each plate has a page of explanation preceding it. 37cm x 28cm.
