1845rif. 17054Fairhaven MA 1845 - 1846. Original leather backed marbled boards. Good; binding rubbed and a bit worn; some signatures loose in the casing. Small folio commercial bound ledger appx. 180 pp. A most interesting commercial record for an unidentified 'finish' worker who was responsible for leading caulking painting and miscellaneous other finish or repair work aboard a variety of vessels - but primarily whalers - out of Fairhaven and New Bedford in 1845/`46. The entries are detailed and explicit as to costs materials employed time and brief description of tasks. In addition to the ships there are entries for all kinds of house finish work both public and private for residents of Fairhaven. Among the ships named with full page entries are the Acushnet Sharon Pacific Ansel Gibbs Amazon Rebecca Sims Java Heroine Florence Eliza Adams etc. - at least 16 individual ships are named and others identified. In addition to repair are the comprehensive entries for new ships e.g. Abraka new schooner Fish Huttelstone appearing with several full page entries. Associated with this employment on new ships was work undertaken for two unidentified 'steam boats' in Fairhaven. In several instances work aboard ship is associated with undertakings for the members of the ownership group of the vessel. See Lund Whaling Masters . hardcover books
1870rif. 24000Belgium ca1870. As accomplished; removed from a frame. There is some browning and minor staining all treatable but overall in generally fresh condition; fading and spotting minor stains to the color silk borders. There are NO rips tears losses etc. A magnificent 7 feet 5" x 11 inch sewing sampler exhibiting skill for lace making and associated decorative and serviceable sewing patterns. Cotton and silk pattern "panels" each appx. 7" long are imaginatively stitched in train making up the length of the sampler; mounted to a cotton backing; edged with color dyed silk satin finish borders. Ideally meant to be rolled and un-rolled for presentation Originating in a pre-WWII English collection. An extraordinary survival - at over 7 feet long - and as such most unusual. A demonstration sampler for a young girl having completed an advanced course of instruction and showing what she was capable of producing. One of the panels in the sampler attests to this by having the designation "2 Cours" utilized as stitched decoration. In addition to the more "common" decorative stitching patterns are examples of fine hand stitched lace decorative ruffled patterns etc. All executed with precision and exquisite skill. A similar sampler was sold in July 2018 at the provincial auction house of Hanson in the UK. Their description stated the item was "unique" and originated at Childonck convent in Flanders. The name is embroidered on one of the panels of their sampler and on a panel of the one being offered here; the selection of styles lace patterns embroidery etc. make the two appear similar. By the time this sampler was finished machine made lace with applied hand-made motifs challenged more expensive hand-made production. From the mid-16th century lace was the latest thing in textiles and female artisans of Flanders produced some of the most precious examples. The history of lace is one of predominantly women's craftsmanship. The church was historically a steady customer. By the late 19th century by "look" there was essentially no difference yet the demands of fashion and cachet of real lace as a signifier of status and wealth continued to drive demand for the true hand work. rif. 25106American pre-Civil War. Framed. Very good with excellent color retention. The sampler has been secured to a backing board some time early in the twentieth century using brass tacks with folding tips. These are applied at the extremities through the eighth-inch hemmed edges and do not impact the design or the integrity of the linen base of the sampler. Colored silk thread on linen base. It measures appx. 305 x 405 mm. A lively and dramatic rendering - given the elaborate flourish of animals and plants that make up the decorative surround - of a popular design motif Solomon's Temple. A symbol of wisdom and knowledge but also a cautionary reminder being a popular Old Testament account of one who strayed from the righteous path. A "caution" that would have been readily recognized and accepted within the congregations of the PA German Pietist community. The whole is executed with considerable skill and care. 1683rif. 714L31London: Obadiah Blagrave 1683. Leather. Good Only. 6" by 3.5". None. An extremely scarce very early edition of this important work regarding the customs and kitchens of the old aristocracy. This work was first published during Cromwell's Commonwealth. Being all three parts in one. 'The Queens Closed Opened'. 'A Queens Delight or the Art of Preserving'. and 'The Compleat Cook'. When this work was first published Cromwell had been in charge for six years and the riches of the old aristocracy were a subject of fascination. 190410 parts in 3 vols., roy. 8vo., First Edition, text in English, with very numerous chromolithographed and tinted plates (original tissue guards present where called for), many large folding maps on japon, and some hundreds of monochrome photographs (a number full-page), and maps in the text; original salmon cloth, backs lettered and tooled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, ORIGINAL WRAPPERS PRESERVED, expertly rebacked with old backstrips laid down, a remarkably bright, clean set. This magnificent record of one of the earliest major international conflicts of the twentieth century is remarkable on several counts. In essence an early partwork, it was compiled and issued whilst the war was still in progress, enabling its readers to follow the course and consequences of the fighting in a manner previously unparalleled. Certainly it is unique is the comprehensiveness and detail of its coverage, and in the variety and extent of its illustrations, the two together constituting a truly massive documentary resource. COMPLETE SETS OF THIS NOTABLE WORK ARE RARE, THE MORE SO IN ORIGINAL CLOTH IN THIS CONDITION. Wenckstern II,140.

Second edition of the English translation by John Norton. ¶ Duodecimo; A-E12 F11 A1 half title present Bound in original full calf missing some leather from spine but cords are very strong. ESTC Citation No. N1243 415J. Some wonderful quotes for this book: The Answer of R. W. to his Friend importunately desiring to know what LOVE might be I Acknowledge the wanton Ty∣ranny of imperious Love that is always requiring the most diffi∣cult Trials of the Affections. Now though it be a kinde of an Hercu∣lean Labour it self to Love considering those severe duties those toyls and hazards appendant to it; as if Cruelty were its sole delight: Nevertheless we believe it reasonable what names so∣ever we have given to Love that he should exercise his Soveraignty which is certainly very great and puissant; and by the Severity of his Commands that he should augment the glory of his high Rule and our obedient Sub∣mission. "However this is the supreme Office of Reason to make a right choice of Disposition and Conditions; to choose a Companion with whom we are sure to live with more delight than with our selves; whose judgment we may be sure to follow as our own: or else to stay till we can finde a proper Ob∣ject of Love. Then also so to love like one who is guided by Judgment not carried away by Passion; like one so far from ceasing that he is always beginning to Love. This is to joyn Patience with Constancy. This is to receive the Idea more fairly imprinted in the Minde than in Wax and to preserve more stedfastly. 'Tis the Of∣fice of Vertue to determine upon one measure of wishing; to covet a dispo∣sition and inclination like his own through all the changes of Fortune; and so to make two of one that they may act the same person.". The "Amoris Effigies anon. London 1649 1664 1668 1671. In 1680 appeared a loose English translation by a Robert Nightingale which deviated in many points from the Latin original. John Norris under the pseudonym Phil-iconerus published a fresh translation London 1682; 2nd edit. 1701; In his introduction Norris wrote of Waring's "sweetness of fancy neatness of style and lusciousness of hidden sense". Waring also wrote Latin verses including in Jonsonus Virbius playwright Ben Jonson.1639 reprinted in the 1668 and subsequent editions of the Amoris Effigies under the title of Carmen Lapidorium." 1885rif.
1619rif. 210021916 - 1923. Commercial album meas. 285 x 370 mm. Good; damp affecting some photos on the last four leaves toward the end of the album covering Patagonia. Oblong folio album of appx. 125 black and white silver photographs of various sizes. Those of Patagonia are of a small format. An eclectic album. The format of the WWI photographs is unusual for their large size. They are mostly "glossy" prints meas. appx. 185 x 240 mm. In composition and subject they are very much like the Frank Hurley photographs of Canadian troops at the Somme in the summer of 1917 e.g. open air shell bursts across fields etc. The most interesting portions of the album are the limited number dedicated to the Canadian female ambulance drivers and some scenes of the war itself. This is followed by a series of small format photographs of Patagonia. These are sparsely described but do provide enough information to ascertain the geographic locations. The compiler had the annoying habit of using initials for identification. The connection of these disparate subjects appears to be that she emigrated to Argentina following war service. The subject of the album indicates a residence or at least a lengthy occupation attributable to one of the female drivers. There is a third section given over to official ceremonies of WWI. In all an evocative grouping. There are also several pages of WWI photographic postcards included in the album which have been ignored in this description. It is however worth noting that one of the photographic postcards labeled "Canadian Official" - Hurley is also represented by a large original glossy print wrecked tank mounted in the album. The photographer apparently operated with some authority in the WWI section since she/he was able to marshal groups of drivers female staff and vehicles for group photographs. unknown books

1885rif. 5333Edinburgh: N.P. 1885. First edition. A lovely album sized 28cm x 37cm. Most of the albumen photographs are sized 21cm x 27cm. Sadly the album has no ownership details but the first photograph is of a British ship This is HMS Malabar a Euphrates-class troopship which appears in several of the photographs so we assume that our traveller was aboard this vessel. Next is a fabulous photograph of what seems to be a theatre troupe perhaps for a fancy dress event on the cruiser as the outfits seem to bear little connection to each other. Sadly there is nothing to identify the participants. Then follows a large photograph of Aden in the Yemen and one of the Suez Canal from Suez itself. The following three photographs are of Port Said at the other end of the canal. Then follow Sixteen photographs of Cairo and district including the pyramids mosques and including several photographs by Félix Bonfils and H Arnoux. Two of the photographs have a small area of loss where the photos have stuck together in the album but with fairly minor loss. Included in these are a lovely photographs of date sellers and a praying man both studio photographs by Zangaki Brothers Janos and Adelphoi and a group of camels about to set off. We return to the Suez canal for the next photograph where the Malabar is photographed by the Zangaki brothers. This image was lately used in the Larousse dictionary with two more photgraphs of the Malabar on the canal. Photographed by the Zangaki brothers. These 26 photographs make up the "Middle Eastern" portion of the album. The next photograph is of the harbour at Malta and there are a total of nine large photographs of Malta. As an interlude is a curious photograph of a cartoon / caricature of a boat being pulled and labelled "The Nile 1884-5." Next we find a lovely photograph of the Rock of Gibraltar from the Spanish coast and two further photographs of Gibraltar landmarks. The next stop on our journey is Norway where there are seven photographs of Christiania Oslo. There is a final Norwegian photograph which is a hand coloured photograph of young women in traditional Norwegian costume. Finally the traveller returns to the United Kingdom and arrives at the Forth Bridge and Edinburgh with two beautiful large sized photographs. Finally are seven smaller but still very respectable albumen photographs of Edinburgh landmarks. These each are 13cm x 21cm. So in total we offer an album of 50 pages containing a total of 56 albumen photographs 49 large format and seven slightly smaller. . N.P. unknown
