1858ref. 69335NP Allegheny County PA 1858. Broadside 49 x 23 cm. Text in two columns with caption title in large bold type. Old fold lines a few tiny holes and some toning previous owner's pencil margin notes. The text reads in part: "From necessity Fellow Citizens we are compelled to talk to you through the medium of Hand-Bills and Circulars the Newspaper Press of the County having been bought by the Railroads and Bondholders." The anonymous author warns fellow taxpayers their hard earned money is being plundered to finance the debts of "worthless and defaulting Rail Road Companies -- viz: The Steubenville Allegeheny Valley and Chartiers." The appeal challenges taxpayers to use their votes to elect a Commissioner and Treasurer who "will not suffer the tax to be levied or assessed." Statistics related to the debts for the cities of Pittsburgh and Allegheny as well as the county totalling $5500000 are given. Noted are roads "repudiated" in 1856 and 1857 and an estimate for ones that "will repudiate in 1858" helping to date this piece. "Will you cast your Suffrages for a Ticket pledged to enforce the collection of these Taxes. or will you rather use the power of the ballot box. to compel the Robbers who have been plundering you to surrender their ill-gotten Gains. The 1850s were an era of increasing infrastructure investments in railroads at least partially financed through taxes and bonds. The Pennsylvania Railroad chartered by the state legislature in 1846 ran its first excursion train to Pittsburgh in 1851. The Ohio & Pennsylvania Railroad chartered two years later began to use a station at Allegheny City in 1851. The two lines were connected by a bridge across the Allegheny River in 1858. The pencil notes on this copy posit a question: "What would City Property be worth without Public improvements." see: William Kenneth Schusler's essay part of his doctoral dissertation "The Railroad Comes to Pittsburgh". unknown

1974ref. SET45-B-2London: Sotheby and Co 1974-1997. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. 12" by 9". None. A three volume catalogue of the Sotheby's auction of Henri Vever's noted Japanese art collection. One of the most renowned jewellers of the early 20th Century Vever was similarly known for his profound interest in Japanese art and for being a member of the Amis de l'Art Japonais a group of enthusiasts including Claude Monet who would meet reguarly to discuss Japanese prints and other works. The collection catalogued here on top of its enormous aesthetic and financial worth is notable as it was disposed of in several instances - mainly due to various occupying forces in the two World Wars that Vever lived through - until resurfacing for this Sotheby's auction in 1974 concluding in 1997. With colour and monochrome reproductions throughout these catalogues give a rare glimpse into one of the leading art collections in its field. Included here is: Part One: 26th March 1974 412 lots Part Three: 24th March 1977 415 lots Final Part: 30th October 1997 197 lots. Part Three contains a seperate sheet of pricing information. In decorative paper-covered boards with gilt detailing and original unclipped dustwrappers. Externally smart there is some minor wear to boards as well as rubbing and wear to extremities. The dustwrappers have some wear to the joints and backstrip most significantly so on part one which is has a small tape repair to underside. . Internally the pages are firmly bound and are bright and clean throughout aside from the odd marking. Near Fine Sotheby and Co hardcover

1678ref. 655L24London: J H and T S 1678. Disbound. Near Fine. 7.5" by 6". None. A scarce seventeenth century pamphlet regarding penal laws dispensed by James II in 1687. This work provides one individual's opinion of these laws through the form of a letter. The first and only edition of this work. The Penal Laws or the 'Declaration of Indulgence' or 'Declaration for Liberty of Conscience' were a pair of proclamations. It was the first step to establish freedom of religion in the British Isles with the King's intention being to promote Catholicism. The declaration was to grant toleration to many Christian denominations. Many Anglicans opposed this Declaration on constitutional grounds. ESTC No. R1415 With the final leaf blank as called for. To the front of this pamphlet a prior owner has written 'John Jubbes' next to the 'Author'. It is unlikely that Jubbes wrote this pamphlet as he was deceased many years earlier. The title page attributes the author as 'Author of the Harmony of Divinity and Law'. The author of this work is George Hickes. Hickes was an English divine and scholar. ESTC does not corroborate this as they do not attribute this work to anyone. The author upon writing to his friend discusses whether the King had the write to create such penal laws. This work delves into scripture doctrines and law to establish a conclusion. This pamphlet was published as the country was in a turbulent state regarding its rule. This demonstrates some of the feeling in the country on the run-up to the Glorious Revolution of 1688-1689 which saw James II dethroned by his daughter Mary and her Dutch Husband William of Orange. A fascinating piece of contemporary history from the seventeenth century. Disbound as is usual. Externally in an excellent condition with just a few light spots. The pamphlet remains bright with just the odd spots. Small loss to the bottom outer margin of B. Near Fine J H and T S unknown
