Mackenzie's version of the German mediaeval classic was first published in 1860 as a Christmas volume but stocks were swiftly exhausted and a second edition prepared to meet continuing demand. Mackenzie produced a lengthy additional preface to this second edition attributing the success of the venture partly to 'the generous and unanimous verdict of the press' but also surely to the wonderful illustrations by 'Alfred Crowquill' A.H. Forrester. Many would-be Christmas readers must have been disappointed for Mazkenzie dates his preface Christmas Eve but scholars of mediaeval romance and fantasy will find this a most useful edition replete with extensive historical preface and bibliographical and other scholarly appendices. The US edition T&F of Boston of the same year is the first American edition of the tale in English. Scarce. Trubner & Co., hardcover

1925rif. 0069221925. Wraps. Near Fine. Eighteen mounted black and white sepia toned photographs of a replica model of King Ludwig II's castle Neuschwanstein. 12mo. 18 by 13.5 cm. The model was constructed between November 20 1924 and May 1 1925 by an unknown artist. The replica was done with meticulous attention to detail -- it is very impressive. The model looks like one of the elaborate confections made from Lego blocks but the model predates Lego which began in 1932. The photos show the model from different angles and ranges with both panoramic and close-up photos. The photos are mostly near full page with two smaller photos sharing a page. The ink writing on the cover is in a cursive now long in disuse and so we aren't able to decipher it in its entirely unfortunately. unknown books

Founded in 1848 Philadelphia High School for Girls also known as Girls’ High holds the distinction of being the first municipally supported secondary school for girls in the United States. Initially established to train teachers for Philadelphia’s common schools the institution underwent a division in 1893. The Normal School relocated to a new site while the high school remained at Seventeenth and Spring Garden Streets adopting the name “Philadelphia High School for Girls” during this transition. Presently it continues to use this name and serves as a public college preparatory magnet high school exclusively for girls situated in Philadelphia. Wikipedia unknown

First American edition and reasonably scarce to commerce. Born into a military family in Queen’s County Ireland Edward Marcus Despard 1751–1803 joined the British Army as an ensign in 1766 and quickly rose through the ranks distinguishing himself as a military engineer and gaining recognition for his efforts during the capture of Fort San Juan from Spain in 1779. ODNB Despard’s career took a controversial turn when he became involved in revolutionary activities upon his return to Britain. He became affiliated with radical groups such as the London Corresponding Society and the United Irishmen ultimately leading to his arrest in November 1802 for allegedly plotting a coup against the government. At his trial in February 1803 Despard was found guilty of treason despite efforts to paint him as a victim of government conspiracy. He was executed on 21 February 1803 leaving behind a legacy marked by both his military service and his radical political ambitions. ibid Shaw & Shoemaker; 4076. unknown
