1940Best.-Nr. 636L6None: None c1940. Paperback. Good. 14" by 8.5". None. A seemingly fictional memoir of a male narrator told through his relationship with horses and how they have affected his life. The chapters provide highlights of his life from childhood to enlisting and fighting in the South African War to enlisting i This work is from the twentieth century and is the author's draft. There are several pencil and pen annotations as well as blanks with notes to fill in further information later. The work regards the coming-of-age of the omniscient narrator and their equestrian experiences. This is in addition to providing the reader with insight into the breeding of and nature of horses. There are three main sections to the work the narrator's childhood their experiences during the South African War of 1899 enlisting in World War I and then a summary final chapter written in 1939. The anonymous author of this work seems well-informed regarding the breeding of hunting and race horses as indicated by the passion in writing and the appendix which provides 'The Cost of A Hunter from a Foal to 5 1/2 years if Bred on a 500 Acre Mixed Farm and Trained by the Owner'. They also discuss derbies in detail and show jumping. Despite some very plausible information it seems that this work is fictitious and 'Llanover Castle' and 'Clyther Manor' seem to be allusions to Llanover Garden Monmouthshire and Clytha Park of Monmouthshire. The Fernley family referred to appear to be completely fictitious as is Lord Carbery. A very scarce and possibly unpublished work in the working draft form. In paper wraps. Externally sound. Chipping to the extremities. A juvenile pencil hand to the front wrap 'Duddy'. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional correctional pen and pencil annotations by the author not affecting the text. Odd spots to pages. Good None paperback
1852Best.-Nr. LTH3-F-24London: Houlston and Stoneman 1852-3. Leather. Good. 6.5" by 4". None. Two interesting novels bound as one. The first Uncle Tom in England appears to be an english novel which draws a parallel to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The author is not attributed although to the rear there is an essay by anti-slavery campaigner and president of the British and Foreign anti-slavery society Thomas Clarkson. To the preface is written that the author has connected its plot to the work of Mrs Stowe and is therefore to be looked on as an Echo or sequel to 'Uncle Tom'. Several characters share their names with Stowe's. This is the third edition of Uncle Tom in England printed the same year as the first American edition. Uncle tom in England is an extremely scarce and unusual text. The second novel to this text is Benjamin Disraeli's novel Venetia. Venetia was originally released in 1837 and was published so as to form an income for Disraeli in a time of need. It is a romance based on the characters of Shelley and Byron. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally generally smart with heavy rubbing to spine and boards. Spine label and head and tail of spine are particularly rubbed. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown 'John P Maitland Family Heriloom'. Another inscription to recto of front endpaper dated 1918. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with scattered spots throughout. Good Houlston and Stoneman hardcover

1949Best.-Nr. 2602001New Jersey: Privately Published 1949. Soft cover. Very Good. q. Carbon copy for family member. Wrappers. 35 one-sided double-spaced pages plus 12 pages of maps 6pp and magazine pictures 6pp. Foldout map of United States with author's traced route to California and back to New Jersey. On November 9 1948 a daughter driving and her mom left Carrobell Farm Asbury Warren County New Jersey for San Francisco. They drove a friend's new Chrysler convertible that he wanted in California. The same friend had a car available when they arrived for them to drive back! As this was the late fall of the year they took southern routes both directions the outward bound through Virginia Tennessee etc. down through Arkansas northern Texas New Mexico and Arizona. The return took them farther south through the cities of Tucson El Paso Laredo St. Charles and directly east to cross the panhandle of Florida before turning north. They returned home on February 20 1949 three and one-half months and 9045 miles after leaving home! The author provide two statistical summaries outward and return of elapsed time miles driven hours spent driving running time average miles per day average speed total gasoline average mpg average per day cost of lodging and cost of meals total cost and average cost per day. While there were no jaw-dropping misadventures on the trip the account is extremely well-written and sufficiently detailed if condensed to make for pleasurable reading. The carbon manuscript is clean in the sense that there are very few strike-outs etc. The author does not identify herself; there was no need as this was done for family. Two photos at the end are apparently of the family farmhouse in New Jersey. Here is what AI has provided about Carrobell Farm. Carrobell Farm is a historic farm located in Asbury Warren County New Jersey. . Origins: The land was part of a larger tract where Joseph Turner and William Allen both from Philadelphia built two iron forges in the 1740s. . Superintendent's Residence: The main house at Carrobell Farm was constructed as the residence for the superintendent of the nearby Union Forge. . Inheritance and Ownership Changes: In 1784 Elizabeth Oswald Chew Joseph Turner's niece and second wife of Benjamin Chew inherited the farm. Later in 1833 Charles Carhart purchased the property from Samuel Chew. This historical information suggests that Carrobell Farm played a role in the iron industry and has been a part of the Asbury landscape for centuries witnessing changes in ownership and potentially evolving agricultural practices over time.
