John Sage 1652-1711 was a Scottish nonjuring Episcopal bishop & controversialist in the Jacobite interest. Abandoning his position in the High Kirk of Glasgow after the deposition of James VII/II in 1688 the non-juror Sage moved to Edinburgh & composed several protestations. Most of Sage's publications were anonymous but their authorship was well known; his controversial writings were shrewd protestations at the intolerant political & religious policy of the new monarchy. An example of early 20th century Black Americana ephemera or as some refer to as 'Negrobilia' referring to a wide array of materials including mass advertisements postcards tourist souvenirs etc. with the image of an African American universally portrayed in a derogatory and racist manner. These items were produced and manufactured by and for white audiences that enhanced the perception of white racial superiority and class status. These type of items are particularly challenging to many communities however many scholars and private collectors alike agree these materials are historical records and reminders of the racist history of the United States and should not be invisible. The puzzle postcard is an example of mass produced racial stereotyping manufactured for an actual mailing enclosure. The instructions on the outside of the mailer state: "Arrange the flaps by placing one over another in such a manner as to show ONLY the eleven pickaninnies." Reference: Goings Kenneth. "Mammy and Uncle Mose: Black Collectibles and American Stereotyping." Bloomington Indiana University Press 1994. 1900ref. 3298France: n/a 1900. Wonderful French architectural manuscript portfolio on 'Perspective'. This appears to be a student's own manuscript and sketches from an architectural or art course. All of the contents are dealing with perspective in different forms. Some are purely mathematical such as the design and sketches of cones and other shapes. Others are examples of sketches drawn in proper perspective. The portfolio contains a large number of loose leaves. Each aspect text in French has one or more illustrations following. Many but not all of the pages have pencilled numbers to the top edge. In total there are 48 pages of text and 64 pages of illustrations / diagrams. In fact there are a few more but we have only counted "significant" pages. The paper is a little darkened and there are a few very minor closed tears to the page edge. The folder has cracking to the spine edge and is darkened and at least one of the ties is still functioning. The front has a tipped on printed illustration with the title. An attractive and fascinating piece. 330 x 255 mm 13 x 10 inches. 330 x 255 mm 13 x 10 pouces. n/a unknown

ref. 2916A lovely album containing 74 large original photographs from five trips. These are Berlin 1895 French Alps and Nancy in 1896 Trier in 1897 Interlaken and the Swiss Alps in 1898 and the Tirol in 1899. The photographs were purchased from prominent commercial photographers of the time. The French photographs are largely from ND Phot the Swiss from Schroeder & Cie of Zurich and Edition Photoglob. The majority of the prints are either albumen or early silver gelatin prints. As the early silver gelatin were so similar to albumen it is difficult to tell. There are a number of colourised prints. Most of the prints are quite large with quite a few as large as 210 mm x 275 mm. Most are printed one to a page but a couple of the smaller prints are printed two to a page. One of the images is a double / folding photograph.
