Best.-Nr. 47600Berlin: 1848: Vereins Buchdruckerei. Broadside 27cm x 20cm ca 10-3/4" x 8". Printed in blackletter on white wove stock. Slightly toned with old vertical and horizontal fold-lines; creased at margins; Very Good. Satirical broadside in the form of a fictional speech by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in which he ironically expresses support for the demands made by liberal parliamentarians at the May 18th Parliamentary Assembly in Frankfurt-am-Main. These included expanded rights for the underprivileged classes including most importantly universal male suffrage; attenuation of executive power; the election of a permanent German parliament and monetary reforms including a unified German currency. The great wave of liberal revolt that washed over the European Continent in 1848 proved short-lived; by 1851 most of the newly-established liberal régimes had been quashed by reactionary movements with radical leaders either imprisoned murdered or driven into exile. Out of this crucible would arise the Franco-Prussian War and the militant Marxist nihilist and anarchist movements of later in the century. A highly evocative document of the first wave of German radical revolt. Rare; OCLC and KVK note three locations only all in Germany. Vereins Buchdruckerei unknown books

References to Barm Beest Gingerbreads Yorkshire Muffins and a range of spiced fruit cakes suggest the receipts were drawn from Northern England. Scarce in any edition or format. An excellent copy. § OCLC records no holdings this edition. A number of variants are held in the UK and the USA § Not in Oxford nor Cagle nor Bitting. cf Axford pps.297-8 for American editions circa 1836. ¹ This edition does not list an author. There are a number of British editions with variations published and/or printed and sold between 1815 and 1848 across Yorkshire and the Midlands claiming authorship by W S Stavely Edward Logan MacKenzie J E Thomas and others. There are also several American editions published 1830s in New York and Chicago claiming authorship by W Young or S W M'Getrick. ² Inspection of digital copies at Leeds University and the British Library suggest this was issued originally with cheaply printed yellow wrappers. ³ Again comparing digital copies from institutional holdings early copies have less recipes; later editions like this have additional chapters for apricot preserves and for temperance drinks. Best.-Nr. 30358Melbourne s.n. 1852. Broadside 210 x 150 mm printed on one side only text set within decorative border surrounding the heading and Psalm LXIX and with a fully contemporary annotation at top left 'P. & O. S. ""Chusan"" 1st arrival at Port Phillip'; in fine condition mounted on card and housed in a modern frame with handwritten note on the reverse: 'John Dowel Whittle 23 years fell overboard from S. S. Chusan first P. & O. steamer into Melbourne on 29th July 1852. He went overboard about 7 miles off Cape Otway about 7.00 am and could not be recovered'; the back is also annotated 'Ex Ingleton Collection'. A rare broadside printed in Melbourne during the first months of the Victorian gold rush. This is the Ingleton copy and is the only surviving example of this broadside we have been able to trace. According to contemporary reports in Melbourne newspapers the unfortunate Whittle was one of the ship's hands on the Chusan and was thrown from the main yard in a storm off Cape Otway. Who knows the young man may well have been contemplating jumping ship in Port Phillip in expectation of making his fortune on the diggings. This broadside is recorded in Ingleton Geoffrey C. Titles printed in red and black. The frontispieces show actors on stage and are unsigned. Historiated initials headpieces and ornamental section breaks. Bound in full leather the spines gilt in compartments with burgundy and black morocco labels and gilt dentelles. ESTC T134816. Second edition and the first under this title of an anonymous anthology of dramatic extracts. It was first published in 1724 as Thesaurus Dramaticus and is here "continued down to the present year". The extracts are arranged alphabetically by subject from Anger and Angels onwards each attributed to its play and author Dryden and Shakespeare prominent among them as a commonplace book for readers speakers and aspiring writers. A third edition enlarged to three volumes followed in 1756 and the work was reworked as The Beauties of the English Drama in 1777. Such compilations helped fix the canon of quotable English drama in the eighteenth century and they show which passages readers of the day most admired. Printed by William Bowyer whose ledgers record an edition of 1000 copies. Few appear to survive in commerce however: we can trace no other copy for sale and no auction record. Most institutional holdings recorded on WorldCat are digital surrogates rather than physical copies. Bindings slightly bumped with minor loss of gilt and some surface wear but sound. Internally clean with minimal foxing. An earlier armorial bookplate in each volume has been covered by the front pastedown and shows through faintly. A very good set. .
