1890ref. 84528London: Longmans Green and Co 1890. First Edition. Octavo. 19.5cm. Publisher's dark blue bevelled boards titled in gilt and blind to spine and front board. 289pp.16pp. ads to rear. Light bumping to spine ends a little scuffing to extremities strong and handsome; internally clean with some marginal toning to page edges top-edge untrimmed. A very good strong copy with only light wear. Published anonymously and one of only three "romance" titles written by Professor Nicholson presumably in spare moments of release from his day job which was being a very notable and respected British economist. His output more normally consisted of works on tariff reform and influential titles like "Effects of Machinery on Wages" and "Tenant's Gain Not Landlord's Loss" his works also include "A Revival of Marxism" in 1920 his last published work. When he wasn't writing studious treatises on the finer aspects of international economics and trade relations he was immersing himself into the creation of complex bits of Ancient Greek weirdness involving torrid rivalries doomed love cursed gemstones and mysterious oracular types holding forth on the wisdom of the gods. Found in Bleiler but not easily found in acceptable condition. Longmans, Green, and Co unknown books

1912ref. GEN36-I-13London : Anon c1912. Cloth. Very Good. 11" by 7.5". None. A collection of travel photographs from London to Algiers. Photographs follow a journey from London to Folkestone across the channel through Dijon to Marseilles and then from Marseilles to Algiers by boat. Dated from the two boats in the photographs. The photographer travels on the SS Charles-Roux a ship build in 1908 and France's first turbine steamer. The ship was in service until 1936. In one of the photographs at the docks at Marseilles there is a photograph of the Theodore Mante. The Theodore Mante was build in 1912 and was a passenger steam ship. However it only retained this name until 1917 when it was renamed Mustapha II. Therefore this album is definitely from between 1912 and 1917. It is highly likely that these photographs are Pre-World War I. The Theodore Mante became the Margit and in 1939 arrived in Malta when war broke out. Due to an air raid on the 19th April 1941 the vessel was hit and suffered extensive damage. It sunk and was not discovered until the 1970s. 48 photographs on 12 leaves. Each photograph is captioned with the location and subject of the image. To the front pastedown is painted the journey undertaken with the title 'A Trip to North Africa'. There is a hand-painted map indicating the places visited. These photographs also have several images of the Paris Lyons & Mediterranean Railway. In the photograph of Charing Cross London there is a woman in the foreground holding a newspaper with the headline clear 'Women Mobbed at Protest' clearly a reference to the Suffragist movement of the time. In a full cloth binding with gilt stamping to the bottom of front board. Externally rubbed to the head and tail of spine and to the joints. Bumping to the head and tail of spine. Small loss to the extremities due to rubbing. Front hinge is strained but firm. Closed tear to the front pastedown due to straining of hinge. Bookseller's label to the rear pastedown Eric Inwood. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Anon hardcover
