1789Best.-Nr. 004352My book plate on front free end paper and armorial book plate of Rev John Dunn Yarker on front paste-down. 3 front free end papers and 3 rear free end papers one of which has been pasted to the last page. One page of errata bound in. Skiver on spine with gold title slightly tarnished; gold crenellations around all edges largely intact; head and tail of spine have been rubbed; hand-made rag paper un-foxed but last four sheets have a brown stain 30mm long and max 4mm wide along the upper edges; somewhat yellowed on all edges. 323 pages large type. There are XXVI letters the first dated Aug 2 1788 and the last Sept 3 1788. On Sept 2 he wrote: So much peturbation and heat will not eafily fubfide; and it will be found a matter extremely difficult if practicable to reduce their minds as before to the yoke of fubjection In fact the whole kingdom feems ripe for a Revolution . Bear in mind Bastille day was under a year later - July 14 1789. Hard Cover Parchment. Coverd in PVC plastic. This book apparently followed a companion volume on the Netherlands. At least 7 other publishers have offered this book some still in print proving that many people would choose a hard copy. The book is a classic of Historic interest. This English printing might be the true first. I do not know if there was an American edition in the same year. VERY rare in this edition. Feel free to make a reasonable offer. T. Cadell hardcover

Titlepage missing upper right corner but text not affected staining to lower edge throughout but not affecting text. Peter Walsh was born in County Kildare. He was guardian of the Franciscan friary at Kilkenny 1648-1650 and then served as chaplain to Castlehaven s army in Munster. All Catholic clergy captured by the Cromwellians were executed and Walsh in danger of death fled Ireland eventually to London where he lived obscurely until the Restoration. Walsh remained a devout adherent of the Catholic Church but kept friendly relations with the Anglicans. He wrote 1672-1684 a series of controversial letters against Pope Gregory VII's doctrine of papal supremacy a History of the Remonstrance 1674 and various other works critical of his fellow Catholics. This book - very rare in its first edition as here - is usually attributed to him. It argues for tolerance between religious factions calling for true liberty of conscience. It condemns persecution in relation to religion arguing that Catholics have as much right to be tolerated as Recusants. As long as other faiths hold doctrines that are consistant with peace and government they should be allowed to follow their conscience. Such writings put Walsh at odds with the Catholic church but before his death in 1688 may have influenced King James II`s 1687 declaration of indulgence referenced by Wing W627. 1860Best.-Nr. 23020French: Unique. ca1860. Contemporary black pebble grain calf. Very good; some rubbing and chafing to the binding. 4to 130 pp. unpaginated large folding ink drawing. Glazed paper that meas. 268 x 206 mm. Accomplished in a neat French script recto/verso in alternate columns with space for notes. The manuscript title leaf is absent. Beginning in the 1820s Henri-Gustave Delvigne a French military officer began experimenting with ways to improve the accuracy and function of the French army's percussion rifles. In short order he developed a design with a modified chamber and rifled barrel that would establish itself as the "Delvigne rifle". In the following years Claude Ètienne Minié would improve on the design through the introduction of a "cylindro-conical" bullet fired from a rifled barrel 1847. It would set a new standard in distance accuracy and lethality it was used extensively in the American Civil War. The work offered here provides the scientific basis - through tests - of the concept of rifling to impart spin to a projectile thereby improving stability in flight and accuracy and the introduction of cylindrical shapes as a basis for projectiles. The ms is not a derivative work but appears to record original tests the author at one point boasts of doing over 10000! shots from the rifles used and introduce new concepts e.g. oil coated projectiles or the issue of retro-fitting ordnance by rifling barrels. He does mention Delvigne on p. 126 in order to explain a figure on the accompanying plate. In all a unique competent and scientific inquiry concerning major improvements to firearms.

1775Best.-Nr. 5002Japan: NP 1775. A lovely large water colour showing a woman in traditional geisha clothing holding a Shamisen. Painted onto thin mustard coloured paper this has been laid onto a cream backing sheet also thin paper which has in turn been laid onto a larger sheet of thin paper. The three sheets together giving much more strength than a single thin sheet. The painting itself has been expertly produced but is unsigned. We have priced this as an un-attributable artist. The painting has some small cracks with creasing and a tiny amount of paint loss to it but still a lovely authentic piece of Edo art very similar in style to the portraiture of Katsushika Hokusai even to the background colour of the sheet. It is of a very similar period between 1775 and 1800. The style of the painting including the detailed depiction of clothing patterns and the graceful posture of the figure is characteristic of bijin-ga paintings of beautiful women which were popular in Japanese art during this time. The use of vibrant colors such as deep blue and red and intricate patterns suggests that this piece may have been created by an artist influenced by ukiyo-e a genre of woodblock prints and paintings that flourished during the Edo period. Artists like Kitagawa Utamaro or Suzuki Harunobu were renowned for similar depictions of women in elegant attire. It was possibly intended as a scroll painting. The painted sheet measures 70cm x 24cm. The largest backing sheet and hence work overall measures 81.5cm x 39cm. The shamisen 三味線 also known as sangen 三絃 or samisen all meaning "three strings" is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. Geisha's were often skilled Shamisen players and used them to entertain their customers. .
