Some wear around the upper front joint of the binding; boards chafed; there is a loss of several letters and 4-5 words along the gutter of the last page of the Contents; the running title is also affected; on the verso an ornamental ruling line and the final letter "r" in the word Herausgeber. There is overall toning and some finger soiling to the first 5 leaves. Front free endpaper is torn; several pages loose in the first signature. 8vo 10 2 3 -184 pp. Vignette title the second title page with the frequently reproduced woodcut of a horse. Rare. One of the earliest American veterinary books in the colonial era. Though the horse is main subject the inclusion of all kinds of domestic farm animals insured its use in the rural Pennsylvania German farming towns. The medicinal recipes are presented in a thoroughgoing fashion with the admonition from the author that many botanical remedies in the available literature mainly the Philadelphischen Calender that always contained a section devoted to botanical cures and practice bear multiple names but are identical. Something his readers should be aware of when following the recipes. He also warns that general treatment and care of animals is as important as the suggested remedies on offer. 1705rif. 792L1Bath: From My Shop in Bath 1705. First edition. Disbound. Good. 7" by 4.5" . None. A very scarce eighteenth century pamphlet defending the healing properties of the water in Bath to one Dr Radcliffe of Tunbridge Wells. ESTC reference no: T62772.In this letter the anonymous author appeals to Radcliffe who is an 'enemy to our Bath-waters' as he vilifies them 'as good for little or nothing'. This rumour has become a part of the legend of Beau Nash of Bath who was said to have calmed people's fears claiming he could neutralise the toad's poison with music which resulted in him raising money for an orchestra to play at the baths. The author tells Dr Radcliffe that he needs to stop speaking ill of the waters in Bath as it was once his favourite 'Tunbridg has been your Favourite formerly next Bath and then Tunbridg again; which argues you have much more fancy than judgement'. A few light chips to the extremities. Several marks to the front leaf. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots to pages. Good From My Shop in Bath unknown

rif. 3733009New York 1859. 16pp. 8vo. First edition and “Printed by Order of the Society.” Original printed wraps are darkened; general creases and soft fold lines from mailing and handling. bjcb 352231 Entirely in verse West Point Life: An Anonymous Communication Read Before a Public Meeting of the Dialectic Society… “details the intense social life at West Point on the eve of the Civil War with amusing accounts of balls and dances and courtships as well as learning soldiering.” Jenkins Authorship has been attributed to Horace C. Porter Class of 1860. The copy at hand gives this penciled inscription on its title-page: “To Miss Constant. With the compliments of Cadet Kilpatrick U.S.M.A.” In a later hand beneath: “Gen. Judson Kilpatrick.” Later nicknamed “Kill-Cavalry” the Irish-American Hugh Judson Kilpatrick 1836–1881 was a fellow member of the Dialectic Society who acted in numerous club performances. Martin p17 Kilpatrick graduated with the Class of 1861 as did Custer and it has been claimed that he was the first regular army officer to be wounded during the Civil War. Kilpatrick’s exploits during the War were numerous if not at times controversial or amusing. Surprised by Confederate forces while taking his bath purportedly sprang naked into his boots and onto his horse and then led a charge against the enemy. He served under Sherman as cavalry chief on the March to the Sea and as a “cavalry commander he was a brilliant leader having originated the saying that ‘cavalry can fight anywhere except at sea.’” DAB In 1874 Kilpatrick co-authored Allatoona: an historical and military drama in five acts and described by Benet’s as being “one of the earliest plays to deal with the Civil War . a tale in which two classmates at West Point fight on opposite sides in the great struggle.” The play was re-interpreted in 1930 by Christopher Morley and published as The Blue and the Gray: Or War is Hell. Kilpatrick’s inscription here as a twenty-three year old West Point cadet is one of the earliest examples one could hope to find for this colorful Union General. Ref. rif. 3731482Tamworth England: Cotton Printer n.d. ca. 1780s; pre-1783. 12½ x 7½ inches. Woodcut two ornamental chain lines. Printed in four columns. Three old manuscript corrections in last column; two lines of text are mostly worn off at the top one partly legible. Archival mat window mylar sheet. An unrecorded 18th century broadside commemorating Sir Lancelot du Lake and Sir Tarquin’s hand-to-hand combat battle. The sheet was sold to tourists at Tamworth Castle in Tamworth Staffordshire where a 16th century mural on the castle’s Great Wall depicted the fight. The mural was whitewashed over in 1783. Friends of Tamworth Castle and Museum The broadside states: “If Travellers who pass that way Tamworth Castle On Serjeant Willcox call He to this Day can shew these Knights Fighting against a Wall.” Prefatory text wraps around a woodcut of Sir Tarquin falling to the ground mortally wounded by Lancelot. Based on Thomas Deloney’s The Noble Acts newly found Of Arthur of the Table Round the verse has has 144 lines consisting of 36 hymnal stanza quatrains. A lesser-known character in Arthurian lore Tarquin had imprisoned 44 knights of King Arthur’s court. When Lancelot confronts him Tarquin at first does not recognize him as the slayer of his brother: "“If thou be of the Table Round Quoth Tarquin furiously Both thee and all thy Fellowship I utterly defy. / Tarquin that’s over bold reply’d Du Lake courageously; Then clapping Spurs unto their Steeds They at each other fly. /. Both wounded were and bled full sore For breath they both did stand. Leaning upon their Swords awhile Quoth Tarquin Hold thy hand /. Why that’s well said quoth Lancelot then Thy motion likes me well; But who’s this Knight thou so do’st hate. His name I pray thee tell / His name quoth Tarquin is Du Lake He slew my Brother dear… / Strait at each other like two Boars They both enraged fly; And two long Hours by Tamworth They fought most furiously. / The Ground besprinkled was with gore Long Time was hard to say Which of these knights the bravest was Or which would win the day; / Till Lancelot with one mighty Stroke His foe did so assail That Tarquin stagger’d and his strength Therewith began to fail; / With loss of blood he then grew faint Which when Sir Lancelot found With all his Force a blow he gave Which brought him to the Ground. / Then forthwith taking off his Helm Smiting his Neck in twain His Body and his Bason threw Into the River Tame. /. God bless our King and may his Knights When put upon the Trial Approve themselves as Lancelot did As Valiant and as Loyal.”" We find no 18th century items with this imprint in OCLC or ESTC. 1920rif. 6067Paris: N.p. 1920. Two manuscripts 7" x 9.25" preliminary draft 23 pages entirely illustrated and written in pencil. The other manuscript 9" x 11.5" contains 17 leaves recto and verso; the text written in pencil but with beautifully detailed gouache illustrations 4 full page and the remainder inset in the text. Housed in a paper folder. The preliminary draft is toned and smudged in places while the color manuscript remains bright and clean. Stunning illustrated manuscript of a Japanese legend from the "City of Pleasure" concerning the beautiful courtesan Otzoumi and the Buddhist priest Itzari. The text of this story appeared in a compilation La cité d'amour au Japon Courtisanes du Yoshuwara by Dr. Tresmain-Trémolières in 1905. The cover and the spine of the paper folder which houses the manuscript both have written manuscrit a Cottin. Perhaps this is a hint as to the author/artist or perhaps means in the style of say Eugène Cottin or another. The gouache pieces are bright colorful detailed and fantastical and to us seem to us to resemble the Art Deco style of George Barbier. Certainly a manuscript worthy of further study. From the library of Jacques Loreau 1920-2010 operatic tenor and avid collector of 19th and 20th century literature and theater. . N.p. unknown

1855rif. 002062Pagan Burma: n/a 1855. A rectangular footed wooden manuscript case sadaik from Burma constructed in three sections providing two separate compartments for manuscript storage. The exterior of the case is richly decorated overall with inscribed scenes outlined in red orange green and yellow lacquer over a black lacquer background. Unusually the box bears seven inscriptions in stylized Burmese script which provides much information on the dating of the box 1855 the donors' names Daw Mae Ngwe and U Sein of Hman Kyo Pagan City and the scenes depicted on the box. These are as follows: for the top panel the left side portrays King Ajatashatru consulting with his ministers regarding where he should seek repentance for his wicked deeds. To the left of center the King is kneeling before Venerable Kasyapa surrounded by attendant Bhikkhus apparently expressing remorse. A single robed figure to the far right Ven. Ananda sits in meditation seeking the Dharma. Around all four sides of the case there are processions of figures in courtly dress all culminating in the center of one long side where a single central figure the Brahmin Dona sits on an ornate platform facing a naga dragon. According to the inscription above him Dona is in the process of distributing the Buddha's relics. The interior surfaces of the three sections are covered in plain red lacquer; the base in black lacquer. The case would typically have been used to house and protect a Buddhist manuscript either a sutra on lontar palm or a Buddhist initiation manuscript kammavaca. There are minor chips and scratches commensurate with its age and use; overall the case is in very good sound condition. The case dimensions are 67 cm. x 21.3 cm. x 22 cm. high. n/a.
