1670rif. 601L7London: E Okes for William Whitwood 1670. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. The first edition of this scarce tract on Ralph Wallis a nonconformist pamphleteer known as 'the Cobler of Gloucester'. This tract appeared following the death of Wallis and focuses on Wallis' ideas and his pamphleteering. Wallis' biographer states to this work that 'His complexion was of a sunburnt gipsy colour and his skin was rough and tawny like singed bacon; his hair was brown and bristly upon his head but his locks were weather-turned like a barber's show periwig'. Despite his Nonconformist views Wallis was raised by Roman Catholic parents. His parents were 'church papists' meaning they conformed to the demands of the Church of England enough to escape persecution. It is believed that Wallis began writing his pamphlets against the government in the 1650's but these early works have not survived. Wallis was apprehended by the government following his dispersion of pamphlets and he was held in custody. He admitted authorship of the works but declared to be in religion 'a Christian' and so was released. His pamphlets were frequently of a scatological tone and featured entertaining anecdotes regarding clergymen whose names and addresses he knew. DNB This work is the ESTC no. R20134. Collated complete. Rebound in full cloth. This biography provides further insight into the political and religious turbulence of the seventeenth century. Rebound in a full cloth binding. Externally excellent with little to no shelfwear. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages with just the odd spots to margins. Very Good E Okes for William Whitwood hardcover

1780rif. 21044Unique. ca1780. Contemporary half leather over paper covered boards. The paper exhibiting a delicate floral design. Very good; some cover wear. Small 4to 114 pp. appx. 195 x 160 mm. Written in German gothic script on laid paper no watermark. Although this volume bears the signature of a John Shank and several lines in English establishing his ownership on January 29 1836 it dates from about 50 years before. It is continental in origin with no record of how Shank came to own it. The opening pages provide recipes for various color inks including the green used to record one other recipe later in the manuscript. It then moves on to colors. coloring metals writing on various surfaces the brazing of non-ferrous metals etching etc. At one point the writer addresses the dyeing of vellum and paper and the use of Lapis lazuli - both exotic topics not encountered in American manuscripts. There are occasional miscellaneous recipes recorded e.g. Dutch gin. The manuscript exhibits little wear or staining and one assumes Shank could not read the exotic text and had it as a keepsake. hardcover books

1930rif. 190901930 - 1933. Commercial albums. Fine. Three oblong folio commercial albums. 332 identified captions in French black and white photographs 125 x 175 mm with an additional 11 fold-out photographic panoramas. A detailed photographic record of the engineering construction of the Mole d'Escale du Verdon the albums omit the art-deco finished appointments of passenger lounges. This multi-year harbor project was planned before WWI but only begun once German war reparations began to be paid to France. The reparations financed this project. The pier was designed as a long gradual arch out into the Gironde River and incorporated the most up-to-date technology e.g. hydraulic dampers for docking ships. In conjunction with this the SNCF undertook the extension and electrification of rail connections not depicted. The photographs offer an elaborate and meticulous record of engineering work and appear to have benefited from unlimited access to the site. This would indicate official sanction but there is no record of this in the albums. Great care was taken to identify and date each of the photographs. unknown books

The magazine was enjoyed by Charles Dickens during his teenage years a fact which doesn't come as a surprise due to his later novels. rif. 84521 6 11 47 folding leaves. Large 8vo orig. yellow patterned wrappers wrappers a little soiled orig. block-printed title label on upper cover new stitching. Korea: 1870s. A rare anonymous manual for the general education of writers of classical Chinese from late ChosÅn Korea. The term “bamboo slips” originally referred to the material supports of writing in antiquity. In classical Chinese usage of later ages — and in this title — the phrase was used metonymically in reference to the implements and genres of classical Chinese writing. This book covers the four “rites” of capping marriage funerals and sacrifices. Each rite had specific genres associated with it which a reader of the book would learn to practice. Ample advice is included for writing letters to parents children teachers and friends — and words to use when referring to these individuals — as well as servants and slaves. While focused on the acquisition of everyday writing skills in classical Chinese this book brings to mind a larger genre of so-called “daily use encyclopedias” Ch.: riyong leishu 日用類書 which flourished in East Asia from at least the 16th century onward but had older antecedents. Those books provided readers even from lower social strata with information for use in a variety of areas. Our book with its national viewpoint and inclusion of elements of elite writing such as classical Chinese verse probably envisaged a rather more elite readership or at least one that had aspirations of social advancement. Who actually used this book is another question of course and the Compilation offers some hints: the pictured page from the list of “state taboos” contains marginalia that is written in part in vernacular Korean in the han’gŭl alphabet with nouns written in Chinese characters. From what we see of the text it appears that it concerns the ritual of entering the tablet of a recently deceased ancestor to the temple. This is also referred to in the printed text below in the context of the succession of kings and consorts. Vernacular writing was widely practiced within the ChosÅn elite but the brushstrokes — for whatever reason — look a bit hesitant. On the basis of the phrases used in the list to refer to the ChosÅn kings and royal consorts researchers have concluded that the edition dates from the reign of King Kojong but before the death of Queen MyÅngsÅng that is sometime between 1864 and 1895. A very good copy. Marginal worming in the final 14 leaves. Our copy agrees with the Harvard copy WorldCat accession number 40692963. unknown
