1854rif. 1945London: Burns and Lambert 1854. First Edition. First Edition. Pamphlet. 8vo. Title page slightly darkened with a small closed tear and a couple of ink spots to the margin. Otherwise a clean copy. Recent paper wrappers. In 1853 Mr Chambers was given leave by parliament to introduce a bill to the Commons. The premise of the bill 'A bill to facilitate personal liberty in certain cases' gave wide access to a panel of commissioners to enter Roman Catholic convents with the aim of securing the freedom of those held there against their will. Catholics viewed this as a scurrilous anti-Catholic attack and denied that any nuns were prisoners. They viewed the legislation as a reaction to the recent restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. The list of signatories to the rear begins with the Lords whose names are led by Charles H Clifford & Francis Stonor. unknown
1900rif. 5705Paris: Lithography by G. Bataille 1900. First edition. The front and rear cover of the May 1900 programme for the Olympia music hall in Paris. This beautiful piece of Nouveau artwork would have been the front and rear covers. Founded in 1888 by Joseph Oller the creator of the Moulin Rouge the Olympia was the oldest music hall in Paris having opened originally as the "Montagnes Russes" a roller coaster before being renamed the Olympia in 1893. Printed onto slightly shiny paper stock the sheet still has the crease and staple holes where it was originally folded. There is a split on the crease to the top couple of centimetres of the sheet. The verso is blank but slightly darkened. We would have suspected that this was a later print of the cover but for the crease and staple holes and the price label being a blue sticker rather than printed which it would be if a later facsimile. Now tipped lightly onto a stiff paper / light card backing sheet. Would look beautiful framed. 25.5cm x 24cm. each side is 25.5cm x 12cm. After or at least influenced by the work of Jules Chéret the French painter and lithographer widely called "the father of the modern poster" who created vivid advertising images for Paris's cabarets music halls and theatres including the Olympia the Folies Bergère and the Moulin Rouge. . Lithography by G. Bataille unknown
