The final leaf of volume I reads 'end of vol I' and the first issue of volume II starts at page 1. 'The Terrific Register' was a weekly penny dreadful published from 1823 to 1825 sold for a penny each containing sensational and melodramatic stories that gave accounts of murder brutal executions torture incest ghosts cannibalism and more. The magazine was enjoyed by Charles Dickens during his teenage years a fact which doesn't come as a surprise due to his later novels. He said that the stories used to 'frighten the wits out of his head'. The 'Register' came about due to the thriving production of cheap reading materials for the working classes. Illustrated with in-text engravings throughout. Bookplate to the front pastedown of Volume I 'Sir Richard Burton'. With the motto 'Vigilans' to the bookplate. This bookplate has been identified as being that of Sir Richard Burton 1755-1855 of Sacketts Hill House Isle of Thanet Kent. A very scarce and influential penny magazine. 1793Best.-Nr. 20083Ephrata: attributed to S Mayer 1793. Later printing. Original plain blue wrappers. Very good; a one inch tear into the text throughout probably caused by a thin string used to bundle this pamphlet with other items no loss. 12mo 24 pp. - printed on a thick Cloister paper. One of several printings in the 1790s and perhaps the scarcest with Arndt #881 locating only two obscure holdings. It is absent from the comprehensive Austin bibliography of American medical imprints. Rare in such nice condition - for any printing. [attributed to S Mayer] unknown books
1930Best.-Nr. 190901930 - 1933. Commercial albums. Fine. Three oblong folio commercial albums. 332 identified captions in French black and white photographs 125 x 175 mm with an additional 11 fold-out photographic panoramas. A detailed photographic record of the engineering construction of the Mole d'Escale du Verdon the albums omit the art-deco finished appointments of passenger lounges. This multi-year harbor project was planned before WWI but only begun once German war reparations began to be paid to France. The reparations financed this project. The pier was designed as a long gradual arch out into the Gironde River and incorporated the most up-to-date technology e.g. hydraulic dampers for docking ships. In conjunction with this the SNCF undertook the extension and electrification of rail connections not depicted. The photographs offer an elaborate and meticulous record of engineering work and appear to have benefited from unlimited access to the site. This would indicate official sanction but there is no record of this in the albums. Great care was taken to identify and date each of the photographs. unknown books

1780Best.-Nr. 21044Unique. ca1780. Contemporary half leather over paper covered boards. The paper exhibiting a delicate floral design. Very good; some cover wear. Small 4to 114 pp. appx. 195 x 160 mm. Written in German gothic script on laid paper no watermark. Although this volume bears the signature of a John Shank and several lines in English establishing his ownership on January 29 1836 it dates from about 50 years before. It is continental in origin with no record of how Shank came to own it. The opening pages provide recipes for various color inks including the green used to record one other recipe later in the manuscript. It then moves on to colors. coloring metals writing on various surfaces the brazing of non-ferrous metals etching etc. At one point the writer addresses the dyeing of vellum and paper and the use of Lapis lazuli - both exotic topics not encountered in American manuscripts. There are occasional miscellaneous recipes recorded e.g. Dutch gin. The manuscript exhibits little wear or staining and one assumes Shank could not read the exotic text and had it as a keepsake. hardcover books

1670Best.-Nr. 601L7London: E Okes for William Whitwood 1670. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. The first edition of this scarce tract on Ralph Wallis a nonconformist pamphleteer known as 'the Cobler of Gloucester'. This tract appeared following the death of Wallis and focuses on Wallis' ideas and his pamphleteering. Wallis' biographer states to this work that 'His complexion was of a sunburnt gipsy colour and his skin was rough and tawny like singed bacon; his hair was brown and bristly upon his head but his locks were weather-turned like a barber's show periwig'. Despite his Nonconformist views Wallis was raised by Roman Catholic parents. His parents were 'church papists' meaning they conformed to the demands of the Church of England enough to escape persecution. It is believed that Wallis began writing his pamphlets against the government in the 1650's but these early works have not survived. Wallis was apprehended by the government following his dispersion of pamphlets and he was held in custody. He admitted authorship of the works but declared to be in religion 'a Christian' and so was released. His pamphlets were frequently of a scatological tone and featured entertaining anecdotes regarding clergymen whose names and addresses he knew. DNB This work is the ESTC no. R20134. Collated complete. Rebound in full cloth. This biography provides further insight into the political and religious turbulence of the seventeenth century. Rebound in a full cloth binding. 1885Best.-Nr. 5333Edinburgh: N.P. 1885. First edition. A lovely album sized 28cm x 37cm. Most of the albumen photographs are sized 21cm x 27cm. Sadly the album has no ownership details but the first photograph is of a British ship This is HMS Malabar a Euphrates-class troopship which appears in several of the photographs so we assume that our traveller was aboard this vessel. Next is a fabulous photograph of what seems to be a theatre troupe perhaps for a fancy dress event on the cruiser as the outfits seem to bear little connection to each other. Sadly there is nothing to identify the participants. Then follows a large photograph of Aden in the Yemen and one of the Suez Canal from Suez itself. The following three photographs are of Port Said at the other end of the canal. Then follow Sixteen photographs of Cairo and district including the pyramids mosques and including several photographs by Félix Bonfils and H Arnoux. Two of the photographs have a small area of loss where the photos have stuck together in the album but with fairly minor loss. Included in these are a lovely photographs of date sellers and a praying man both studio photographs by Zangaki Brothers Janos and Adelphoi and a group of camels about to set off. We return to the Suez canal for the next photograph where the Malabar is photographed by the Zangaki brothers. This image was lately used in the Larousse dictionary with two more photgraphs of the Malabar on the canal. Photographed by the Zangaki brothers. These 26 photographs make up the "Middle Eastern" portion of the album. The next photograph is of the harbour at Malta and there are a total of nine large photographs of Malta. As an interlude is a curious photograph of a cartoon / caricature of a boat being pulled and labelled "The Nile 1884-5." Next we find a lovely photograph of the Rock of Gibraltar from the Spanish coast and two further photographs of Gibraltar landmarks. The next stop on our journey is Norway where there are seven photographs of Christiania Oslo. There is a final Norwegian photograph which is a hand coloured photograph of young women in traditional Norwegian costume. Finally the traveller returns to the United Kingdom and arrives at the Forth Bridge and Edinburgh with two beautiful large sized photographs. Finally are seven smaller but still very respectable albumen photographs of Edinburgh landmarks. These each are 13cm x 21cm. So in total we offer an album of 50 pages containing a total of 56 albumen photographs 49 large format and seven slightly smaller. . N.P. unknown

1619Best.-Nr. 210021916 - 1923. Commercial album meas. 285 x 370 mm. Good; damp affecting some photos on the last four leaves toward the end of the album covering Patagonia. Oblong folio album of appx. 125 black and white silver photographs of various sizes. Those of Patagonia are of a small format. An eclectic album. The format of the WWI photographs is unusual for their large size. They are mostly "glossy" prints meas. appx. 185 x 240 mm. In composition and subject they are very much like the Frank Hurley photographs of Canadian troops at the Somme in the summer of 1917 e.g. open air shell bursts across fields etc. The most interesting portions of the album are the limited number dedicated to the Canadian female ambulance drivers and some scenes of the war itself. This is followed by a series of small format photographs of Patagonia. These are sparsely described but do provide enough information to ascertain the geographic locations. The compiler had the annoying habit of using initials for identification. The connection of these disparate subjects appears to be that she emigrated to Argentina following war service. The subject of the album indicates a residence or at least a lengthy occupation attributable to one of the female drivers. There is a third section given over to official ceremonies of WWI. In all an evocative grouping. There are also several pages of WWI photographic postcards included in the album which have been ignored in this description. It is however worth noting that one of the photographic postcards labeled "Canadian Official" - Hurley is also represented by a large original glossy print wrecked tank mounted in the album. The photographer apparently operated with some authority in the WWI section since she/he was able to marshal groups of drivers female staff and vehicles for group photographs. unknown books
