1685réf. 706L9Paris: Francois Muguet 1685. First edition. Disbound. Very Good Indeed. 10.5" by 8". None. A very scarce legal tract from France dated 1685. This work details the revoking of the sentence of the Galeres or galleys. This edict was presented to the court of aids on the 19 November 1685. In the original French. Being two leaves and therefore four pages. A very scarce work with no copies cited on the Library Hub. This edict deals with the punishment of individuals on the galleys or galeres. There is mention of the ineffectiveness of whips due to the fact that this simply injures criminals. The tract states that medical professionals are then kind to the offenders which brings a rise in recidivism. An interesting insight into the French penal system in the late seventeenth century. Disbound as called for. Externally very smart. Light spots to the front and rear pages. Inscription to the title page dated 1685. Firmly bound. Pages are bright with light scattered spots. 1894réf. GEN34-H-13London : Macmillan & Co. 1894. Cloth. Near Fine. 10.5" by 7.5". None. A limited edition late 19th century collection of light-hearted poetry illustrated by Hugh Thomson and with an introduction by Austin Dobson As part of the first edition one hundred and fifty copies of this large paper edition were printed. The poetry consists of short vignettes often on country characters or pursuits. 'Coridon' is a reference to a stock character of ancient pastoral poetry; characters of that name appear in both Theocritus and of course the Eclogues of Virgil. Hugh Thompson's style reflected the nostalgia of the time his fine line drawing of rural characters and gentle countrified society appealing to the imagination of the public. He worked on two books for his friend the poet Austin Dobson The Ballad of Beau Brocade 1892 and The Story of Rosina 1895. This collection represents a further collaboration. Though it is unclear the author is most likely Dobson Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD 1906-1973 a noted book collector and diarist. In the original cloth with a spine label. Externally excellent with just a little fading towards the edges of the boards and to the spine. With a shelf label to the front pastedown. The text block is untrimmed but the edges remain reasonably clean. The pastedowns and endpapers are lightly foxed but internally clean and bright throughout and firmly bound. 1809réf. LTH20-A-3Oxford: Dawson Bensley and Cooke 1809. Leather. Very Good. 12" by 9.5". None. A beautifully bound 1809 publication of the Book of Common Prayer. Bound into the end is 'a new version of the Psalms of David fitted to the tunes used in churches by N Brady Chaplain in Ordinary and N Tate Poet-Laureat to His Majesty'. Printed 1807. With 'the form and manner of making ordaining and consecrating of bishops priests and deacons'. Includes the calendar with the table of lessons the table of movable feasts. Printed at the Clarendon Press by Dawson Bensley and Cooke printers to the University; and sold by W. Dawson at the Oxford Bible Warehouse Paternoster Row London. The Book of Common Prayer is the short title of a number of related prayer books used in the Anglican Communion as well as by the Continuing Anglican "Anglican realignment" and other Anglican churches. The original book published in 1549 Church of England 1957 in the reign of Edward VI was a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. Prayer books unlike books of prayers contain the words of structured or liturgical services of worship. By the 19th century other pressures upon the book of 1662 had arisen. Adherents of the Oxford Movement begun in 1833 raised questions about the relationship of the Church of England to the apostolic church and thus about its forms of worship. Known as Tractarians after their production of Tracts for the Times on theological issues they advanced the case for the Church of England being essentially a part of the 'Western Church' of which the Roman Catholic Church was the chief representative. The Book of Common Prayer has had a great influence on a number of other denominations. While theologically different the language and flow of the service of many other churches owes a great debt to the prayer book. Together with the Authorized version and the works of Shakespeare the Book of Common Prayer has been one of the three fundamental underpinnings of modern English. As it has been in regular use for centuries many phrases from its services have passed into the English language either as deliberate quotations or as unconscious borrowings. 1908réf. 6655Hartlepool; F W Mason Printer 1908. 1908. Poster approximately 76 cm x 51 cm. Single sheet with titles printed in bold and underlined. Creased from folding with a few nicks to edge and some inky finger-marks otherwise in Very Good condition. The main text takes the form of a conversation between two working class drinkers Joe and Bill giving their clear reasons why pubs should be open for reasonably long hours during the week and on Sundays and exhorting the reader to sign the petition for MPs asking them to vote against the Bill. The proposal to limit Sunday opening times was one of a long series throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with this poster almost certainly referring to the Licencing Bill of 1908 which aimed to significantly curtail Sunday opening hours would have given local justices the power to enforce total Sunday closing. The Bill was aimed at curtailing drunkenness amongst the working classes although when Bill complains "then we are not to have the right to drink at the pub before 8 o'clock in the morning if we want one ever so badly" he rather sounds like a case in point. The Bill was strongly opposed by the general public and was ultimately voted down. Large ephemeral and unsurprisingly unrecorded. Hartlepool; F W Mason, Printer, 1908. unknown
