réf. 46943with various interesting particulars relating thereto carefully reprinted from ancient documents : together with a notice of the fortifications of the town at that period its forts outworks walls gates draw-bridges &c.; and an attempt to trace and point out the existing remains of those ancient fortified barriers. Plymouth : G. P. Hearder 1843. Duodecimo modern marbled papered boards with gilt-lettered Morocco title-piece to upper board; pastedown with ex libris of G. & N. Ingleton; original printed blue wrappers bound in title with ownership inscription of noted Plymouth Dissenter Robert Govett 1813-1901 pp. 58 folding colour map; occasional light foxing a very good copy with a newspaper article on the Siege of Plymouth cut from the Western Daily Mercury 11 December 1874 mounted on 3 leaves at rear. A scarcely recorded account of the Siege of Plymouth by the Royalists in the Civil War locally published in the bicentennial year of the bloodiest episode in the city's history. Although the source documents on which the narrative is based are not explicitly stated it seems likely that the diary of John Syms Puritan naval chaplain and librarian was one of them. Having refused to surrender to the Royalists the citizenry of Plymouth signed a solemn covenant to fight to the last man; although poorly armed the defenders managed to overcome a formidable attacking force commanded by Sir Richard Grenville. The town held out for the next four years until the Parliamentary army finally prevailed over the Royalists. With the death of Cromwell in 1658 and the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 however retribution was exacted by King Charles II against the leaders of the Plymouth resistance many of whom were imprisoned. 1733réf. 89311London: W. Dickenson in Witch Street 1733. First Edition. Folio. 32.5cm. Disbound with slight residual crust of old calf to spine region. 18pp. Some old ink spots to title page which effectively comprises the front wrap strong and durable toning to the extremities of both outer wraps and a little internal thumbing otherwise clean and fresh woodcut head and tailpieces luxuriously wide margins. A very good long disbound example of a well-aimed piece of 18th century satire. A vastly Popean excoriating satire of the Whig government of the 1830's under Robert Walpole James Ralph William Stanhope as Secretary of State George Byng as First Lord of The Admiralty and a host of other aristocratic pillars of the British aristocratic system. Written in full flow as faux-Pope Whitehead with full reference to The Dunciad and wielding the righteous wrath of a breakfast table diplomat under full sail tears into the sitting government and bemoans with Pope how nothing has changed since the last crop of dunces. A successful part II was published in the same year and the two are often found bound together this copy comprises only part I. Whitehead's uncanny ability to ape Popean epic actually made him something of a living during the 1830's-40's allowing him to pen political and social satire like a Temu Alexander Pope but available at Witch Street prices. Foxon gives priority to this one which also contains 24 lines eliminated in the others. This was the poem that Whitehead sold for an advance of ten guineas provoking Johnson to demand the same for London in 1738. réf. 46516London : The Working Men's Educational Union King William Street Trafalgar Square 1854. Coloured lithographic wall hanging printed on calico 880 x 1160 mm; original brass eyelets at each corner; numbered 'LM No. 12' lower left; slightly creased but a well preserved example the hand colouring still strong and vibrant. The Working Men's Educational Union was a philanthropic organisation founded in London in 1852. One of its aims was to provide free education for the working classes through public lectures at numerous venues across the city. During the 1850s it published at least 400 different large format lithographic wall hangings which it called 'Diagrams' that were designed to illustrate lectures on a wide variety of subjects. They were produced on calico inexpensive unprocessed cotton - apparently to avoid paper duty - and were available for purchase at the Union's premises in Skinner Street Clerkenwell and King William Street near London Bridge. In 1854 the Union advertised a series of these Diagrams titled Missionary Scenes 'Being twenty coloured Diagrams upon Missionary Trials Perils and Insults Heathen Superstitions Cruelties etc. ; suited for Missionary Lectures. Price to subscribers £1 10s. to non-subscribers £2 5s' advertisement contained within the pamphlet The progress of locomotion; being two lectures on the advances made in artificial locomotion in Great Britain by Benjamin Scott. London Published by F. Baron for the Working Men's Educational Union 1854. It is likely that the present Diagram of which we can trace no other extant example formed part of this Missionary series. Indeed it seems reasonable to posit that the 'LM' preceding the sequence number '12' at lower left refers to 'Lectures on Missions' or similar. Although its artist is unidentified the image is possibly after a published lithograph perhaps one which appeared in a journal such as the Illustrated London News. The Alexander Turnbull Library National Library of New Zealand holds in its collection fifteen lithographic Diagrams produced by the Working Men's Educational Union. These depict scenes in New Zealand Australia the Torres Strait the Pacific Islands and South Africa. unknown

réf. 46776Title from caption at centre of image. Albumen print of calendar for 1866 with two illustrations one of shipping in Hobson's Bay the other a view of the city of Melbourne from the Yarra; carte de visite format 101 x 63 mm mount; recto of mount imprinted at bottom margin 'Pt. No. 5 / Copyright Secured'; verso blank; print and mount are both in fine condition. Cartes de visite of this type - usually featuring a short rhyming verse and with a pictorial theme - were printed as novelty items to be placed as a frontispiece in the family's or collector's photograph album. However this Melbourne-themed example which comprises a miniature calendar for 1866 with tiny illustrations is one that we have never sighted before. Nor have we seen an example from any other year. The publisher too remains a mystery as we can trace no mention of 'The Victorian Album Almanack' in Melbourne newspaper advertisements or notices of the period. A bona fide Melbourne carte de visite curio. unknown
1968réf. 4701Paris: NP 1968. A large 40 cm x 29.5cm black and white silver print / silver gelatin photograph of a Paris wall in May 1968. The photograph shows a poster of Hitler hiding behind a mask of Charles de Gaulle. He is wearing the Cross of Lorraine as his armband. The Free French forces in world war 2 under de Gaulle had used this symbol. This is pinned over a background which states "CRS SS" multiple times. The CRS compagnies républicaines de sécurité was the National Reserve Force to deal with strikes and demonstrations. In fact this slogan dates back to 1948 when the CRS was first formed. The wall also shows a hand written sign for a manifestation in the evening of the 19th at St Lazare. Public demonstrations were often and are still often held in the space in front of the St Lazare station. This is almost certainly a large print of a reportage / press photograph of the time. In red ink to the reverse is written "68." The central poster was used in the 1968 student riots and although we have been unable to trace this photograph there is an "internet ghost" of it which states it was taken in May 1968. Condition is excellent with no significant marks or dirt to it. . NP unknown
