réf. 002064Thailand: n/a A robust antique Thai manuscript case constructed of tropical hardwood possibly teak. The case consists of a framed structure on an extended base with six recessed panels two on each long side and one on each end. A removable lid sits flush within the top section of the frame and a small leather thong on the lid facilitates its lifting and removal. All side surfaces are lavishly decorated in the lai rot nam technique employed widely in temple wall and door decoration in the Rattanakosin Period from which this case dates. The technique involves the overlay of gold leaf to create decorative elements onto a black lacquer background. All six panels depict seated figures of deities hands in anjali mudra surrounded by dense designs of stylized rocks floral elements and foliage. The interior of the case is covered with plain red lacquer; the lid with a transparent lacquer and the underside of the base remains untreated. A very similar case although longer and narrower with three rather than the present two side panels may be seen in Gallery 213 of the Minneapolis Museum of Art. The case dates to the mid to late 19th century and would typically have been used to house and protect a Buddhist manuscript on lontar palm. There are minor chips and some surface wear commensurate with its age and use; overall the case is in very good sound condition. The case dimensions are 51 cm. x 26 cm. x 26.5 cm. high. n/a. 1920réf. 6067Paris: N.p. 1920. Two manuscripts 7" x 9.25" preliminary draft 23 pages entirely illustrated and written in pencil. The other manuscript 9" x 11.5" contains 17 leaves recto and verso; the text written in pencil but with beautifully detailed gouache illustrations 4 full page and the remainder inset in the text. Housed in a paper folder. The preliminary draft is toned and smudged in places while the color manuscript remains bright and clean. Stunning illustrated manuscript of a Japanese legend from the "City of Pleasure" concerning the beautiful courtesan Otzoumi and the Buddhist priest Itzari. The text of this story appeared in a compilation La cité d'amour au Japon Courtisanes du Yoshuwara by Dr. Tresmain-Trémolières in 1905. The cover and the spine of the paper folder which houses the manuscript both have written manuscrit a Cottin. Perhaps this is a hint as to the author/artist or perhaps means in the style of say Eugène Cottin or another. The gouache pieces are bright colorful detailed and fantastical and to us seem to us to resemble the Art Deco style of George Barbier. Certainly a manuscript worthy of further study. From the library of Jacques Loreau 1920-2010 operatic tenor and avid collector of 19th and 20th century literature and theater. . N.p. unknown

réf. 001768A Japanese woodblock-printed miniature book in orihon leporello format depicting the story of Momotaro the Peach Boy in five multicoloured panels. The story of Momotaro a defeater of demons is one of the most beloved folk tales of Japan. Originating in the 16th century it was related orally until the Edo period at which point it was portrayed in paintings and illustrated books as it has been from then until the 20th century. During WWII the character was employed as wartime propaganda in which the 'demons' became American soldiers. In the present miniature the five panels illustrate the story as follows right to left: 1. A childless elderly couple find a peach by the river. 2. Back at home a boy emerges from the peach the boy is subsequently raised by the couple. 3. Momotaro having matured into a heroic young man departs with his dog to fight a band of demons who have been terrorizing the land. 4. Momotaro meets a monkey and a pheasant who with his dog become allies in the battle. 5. Momotaro and his friends having defeated the demons return home with the demon chief as captive. The book is composed of a heavy fibrous paper; the front cover of which has a woodblock printed panel bearing the title and an image of the Peach Boy among pink flowers. The rear cover is decorated with a white and green floral pattern on red ground. Japan is the only Asian culture with a significant interest in miniature books - as it is with miniatures of many other objects eg. netsuke bonsai etc. Such miniature books are referred to as mamehon or 'bean books'. While popular in Japan to the present day few are found in Western collections. A charming example of the genre. Mid twentieth century fine condition; size 3.8 x 3.0 cm. 3.8 x 3.0 cm. unknown
