References: Wing 1996 V725; ESTC No. R7957. ~PPP~ A first edition copy of the 1681 broadside issued anonymously by the radical Whigs during the Restoration period in England containing a series of Whig-oriented petitions to the members of the Oxford Parliament. The principal theme of these petitions was stated as 'No Popish Successor no French Slavery.' Though purporting to speak for 'the people' the anonymous author makes clear that this does not refer to the 'hoi polloi' but rather to citizens of some means. In the preface the author notes that 'some people have lately spoken contemptuously of the populace calling them the rabble . . . the dregs of mankind.' These terms are applied to 'persons without estates' who are assumed to be without 'reason and judgment' but he argues he is writing on behalf of 'men of large estates well-bred gentlemen merchants . . . and rich and substantial yeomen and freeholders.' The Restoration of the English monarchy began when the English Scottish and Irish monarchies were all restored under Charles II after the Interregnum that followed the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
