A Regency/late Georgian/early Victorian book from Northern England on confectionery baked goods preserves desserts non-alcoholic drinks sugar and boiled candy with chapters on curing malt liquor perry beer and ale. The final chapter is "Pleasing and Cooling Drinks many of which may be used by Members of Temperance Socities sic". There are 110 recipes ranging from funeral bunns to curing ropy ale; barley sugar to elder wine bride cake to quince cream.³ Many of the recipes are for commercial quantities and a number have suggested prices and costs. References to Barm Beest Gingerbreads Yorkshire Muffins and a range of spiced fruit cakes suggest the receipts were drawn from Northern England. Scarce in any edition or format. An excellent copy. § OCLC records no holdings this edition. A number of variants are held in the UK and the USA § Not in Oxford nor Cagle nor Bitting. cf Axford pps.297-8 for American editions circa 1836. ¹ This edition does not list an author. There are a number of British editions with variations published and/or printed and sold between 1815 and 1848 across Yorkshire and the Midlands claiming authorship by W S Stavely Edward Logan MacKenzie J E Thomas and others. There are also several American editions published 1830s in New York and Chicago claiming authorship by W Young or S W M'Getrick. ² Inspection of digital copies at Leeds University and the British Library suggest this was issued originally with cheaply printed yellow wrappers. ³ Again comparing digital copies from institutional holdings early copies have less recipes; later editions like this have additional chapters for apricot preserves and for temperance drinks. 1867réf. 69292London England 1867. Plain stiff paper wrappers soiled ink marks stitched. 15 x 11 cm. approx. 106 pp. of text rest blank ca. 10000 words in ink and occasionally pencil in a neat hand. The unnamed author commences three or four different stories penning a chapter or two for at least three of them. His subjects include a country house party and the interactions of the guests; a family in mourning and a solicitous guest; a young man down on his luck who forges his employer's signature on a check; etc. There are moments of humor and self-absorption by some of the characters food and drink seem to pre-occupy the author's thoughts there are curious turns of phrase and spelling aberrations. The first line of the first story introduces his main character: "My name is Nathiniel Lanyon. There's a Chirstian name for a man in my station of life." He goes on to say he was named after his grandfather who taught him how to drink "whisky of the strength of seven parts of the spirit to one of water.so I can now drink my evening comfort as strong as that with an unteared that is to say tearless eye." In another story a woman describes her turncoat friends as having been tested and their loyalty "snapped like rotten twigs." In another a young man is described as having "an head conically inclined." There are numerous ink corrections and alterations in the text. The rear pastedown has a short ink recipe for cold cream and a clipped article offering advice for brushing teeth with a combination of gin nutmeg and lemon juice. A clue to the author's identity comes on the final page of the notebook where he pens the text of an advertisement: "A dispenser to board out of the house in the country address stating terms to E.L. care of Messrs Gale & Co. Bouverie Street Fleet Street London." In the classified section of the November 9 1867 edition of the Lancet General Advertiser London: A Journal of British and Foreign Medicine George Fall: 1867 this ad appears almost verbatim: "Wanted by a General Practitioner in the country a DISPENSER; to board out of the house -- Address stating terms to E.L. care of Messrs. Gale and Co. Bouverie-street Fleet-street London." Presumably the author of these amateur sketches was himself a doctor. unknown

Davis on various page; a good sound copy. A rare account of the murder of Francis Shitz the publishers proclaiming: “Among the many dreadful murders and assasinations with the history and trial of which a considerable portion of the work just spoken of is taken up there are few if any which appear to have been more cruelly and deliberately contrived than the bloody deed which will be detailed in the following sheets.” p3 McDade writes that the “will of Peter Shitz left most of his estate to his sons Francis and Peter but if they died without children part went to his daughter Elizabeth. Hauer was the husband of Elizabeth and he hired four Irishmen newly arrived in the country to kill his brothers-in-law. Two masked men raided the house one night and killed Francis with an ax but Peter escaped. M’Manus and Hauer were hanged.” McDade Sabin 43564. Evans 34040. ESTC W11939. McDade 663. unknown
