Best.-Nr. 74291N.p. London: Elstree Studios 1960. Literary and cinematic critique Elstree Studios' unfavourable report of Ian Fleming's For Your Eyes Only written five days prior to publication from page proofs submitted by Fleming's agents Pearn Pollinger & Higham. 8pp. typed report on rectos only reader's delivery stamp to first page dated 15 December 1955. Perforations down left edge from office binding. Well preserved. The fourth James Bond novel Diamonds Are Forever was published on 26 March 1956. Elstree's reader report notes that Fleming's literary agents Pearn Pollinger and Higham Ltd. submitted page proofs of the novel to the studio on 15 December 1955. The Summary begins favourably 'Another fast-moving exciting thriller starring Ian Fleming's hero James Bond.' but goes on to comment that the book 'contains a less arresting plot than Moonraker or Casino Royale'. The outline of the plot in the Story section runs to six and a half pages - after which the reader's Comment is less than positive: 'Ian Fleming has been aptly described as "Peter Cheyney for the carriage trade" and it would be difficult to find a better summing up. He writes better than the majority of thriller-writers but his smooth style occasionally trips up with the over-unusual simile designed to arrest and startle the reader. Also in order to tickle jaded palates he goes all out for the unusual locale and in this book jumps from the Saratoga race-track to a frontier ghost town just outside Las Vegas laying on too much local colour altogether. One cannot overlook him for he is rapidly becoming one of the most popular thriller writers of his day. But this book while it could make a film does not immediately suggest itself for screen adaptation. There is nothing sufficiently startling or unusual in the story to lift it above the 'B' class. Not recommended.' According to its first page this report was specifically compiled for Warner Bros. who had acquired a controlling interest in Elstree in the 1940s. N.p. Best.-Nr. 74493N.p. London: Elstree Studios/ABPC 1951. Literary and cinematic critique Elstree Studios' report on the first stage adaptation of the Hercule Poirot detective novel The Hollow. 3pp. typed report on rectos only reader's delivery stamp to first page. Together with a first edition of the play/acting edition Samuel French 1952. Perforations down left edge from office binding. Very well preserved. Book shows some handling and use; very good. Agatha Christie's The Hollow was published in 1946 and the play on which it is based produced by Peter Saunders opened at the Arts Theatre in Cambridge on 10 February 1951. After an eight-week tour the play opened at the Fortune Theatre in London on 7 June 1951 to an enthusiastic press response and was attended by Queen Mary. The report states 'this is quite an effective and amusing play of the usual Agatha Christie ingenuity. . The play does not exactly invite filming - there is too little action and too much talk.' It transferred to the Ambassadors Theatre on 8 October 1951 and ran for 376 performances. Christie was so pleased with Saunders' production that she took him to lunch just after Christmas 1951 and gave him a brown paper package. Inside it was the script for a new play she had just written based on a 1947 radio play broadcast for Queen Mary's birthday entitled The Mousetrap. This became the longest running play in the world reaching its 30000th performance on 19 March 2025. Saunders was knighted in 1982. N.p. [London: Elstree Studios/ABPC], 1951 unknown

1852Best.-Nr. 21463Mexican-American War Presidential Slavery A History of Wrongs Inflicted on Winfield Scott by the Supporters of Franklin Pierce. Washington D.C.: Gideon & Co. 1852. Printed wraps. 24 cm. Un-opened sheet. Old folds. 16 pp. OCLC shows 27 holdings none in Texas. Scarce today. Rare Book Hub shows one auction record. The publication has highlighted passages from numerous speeches in which Scott's character was belied by the opposition. Contains a section on the opposition his appointment to command in the Mexican American War. The 1852 election pitted Whig nominee Winfield Scott against Democrat Franklin Pierce and Free Soil Party John P. Hale. With very little difference in terms of policy between the candidates the election became a personality contest. Scott was hailed as a war veteran but Pierce had also served under Scott as a brigadier general during the Mexican War. Scott was beaten in a landslide in what would be the worst defeat in Whig history. paperback
