Light edge toning and corner rounding else very good. OCLC shows 5 holdings AAS; Univ. Ill.; Folger Shakespeare Lib.; Natl. Def. Univ. & Lib. of Congress. Henry Rathbone and Mary Todd Lincoln are sitting on either side Lincoln with Clara Harris next to Mrs. Lincoln. Below the images is a quote from Macbeth from his "vaulting ambition" soliloquy in Act 1 Scene 7 Lines 17-20: with "This Duncan" changed to "This Lincoln." Caption: "This Lincoln / Hath borne his faculties so meek; has been / so clear in his great office; that his virtues / shall plead tramped-tongued against / the deep damnation of his taking off." "After Lincoln's assassination the nation fell into a deep mourning. Broadsides such as this one were a form of mass media in the 19th century … Lincoln was known to keep a copy of Macbeth in his back pocket as he rode from town to town working as a young lawyer and was said to quote it frequently. … These lines are from a scene where Macbeth is lauding King Duncan a man he plans to murder for being so virtuous a ruler that his legacy would speak for him after death. The American public quickly made the connection between the two assassinations and used Shakespeare's words to express their bereavement for their own leader who was unjustly struck down. …."
