1798rif. LTH18-F-3London: I Herbert 1798. Leather. Good Only. 7.5" by 5". None. This is a scarce lyrical retelling of the medieval legend of Robert the Devil's son told in verse. Mythology describes Robert as the devil's son for his mother despairing of heaven's aid in order to obtain a son addressed herself to the devil. Beautifully Illustrated throughout including a frontispiece depicting Robert through his fictional life. The oldest known account of this legend is a Latin prose narrative by a Dominican friar Etienne de Bourbon created in 1250 where which Robert ends his life as a pious hermit. In England the story is treated as metrical romance where instead he marries the emperor's daughter whose love he has won in his humble disguise and succeeds to the throne. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedown stating "Anchor Tutissima Virtus" which translates as "Let the power of the Surest". Bound in a half calf binding with paper covered boards and original spine lable. Externally a trifle rubbed with front board detached. Rear joint weak and may detach in the post. Internally binding is tender with detached pages but all present. Bright plates with occasional spotting to pages. Good Only I Herbert hardcover

1890rif. 56551890. Attractive hand-coloured lithographic sheet with a sequence of captioned scenes from Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe including "tempted to leave home" "shipwrecked" "making boat" "building his hut" "rescues Friday" and "leaving the island." A vivid and decorative narrative print evidently intended for a juvenile or educational audience with the action arranged in a charming story-panel format around a central island scene. No publisher's imprint or verso text. No date but style and hand colouring suggest late 19th century. Blank to verso. Signs of having been folded - possibly from a book. Neat repairs visible from reverse but not from front view. 27 x 43 cm. . 27 x 43 cm. unknown
