ref. 51794George Town Tasmania : s.n. 1900. Dance card 88 x 56 mm folding lithographically printed on 4 sides in black on pink card; front with title in capitals in contrasting fonts and geometric decoration; centre with programme of dances beside a number of which the original male owner has written the name of his female dance partner in pencil Miss E. Tiffen; Miss Eddy; Miss E. Parish; Miss M. Pope etc.; rear side with a vignette illustration of a rifleman in uniform; well preserved with some minor staining. This attractive dance card is quite possibly a unique survivor. The ball received an enthusiastic report in the Launceston Examiner 13 August 1900: 'GEORGE TOWN Saturday. The military ball which has been looked forward to with pleasure came off on Wednesday evening in the new George Town Hall and I understand was a great success. There was a large attendance many coming from Lefroy Beaconsfield etc. The weather which for two or three days previous was very wet and wintry on Wednesday proved beautifully fine. Dancing commenced at 8.30 and was kept up until nearly daylight. A lengthy programme was arranged and under the efficient management of Mr. C. Seymour as M.C. every dance passed off without a hitch. About midnight a nice supper was provided and partaken of. After supper dancing was resumed and continued until as above stated. The music — piano and violin — was supplied by Miss and Master Jensen of Beauty Point. This being the first ball in our new hall the result was considered very satisfactory as there were something like 50 couples dancing at one time and they were not in the least incommoded. The George Town detachment are to be congratulated on their annual military ball which is always looked forward to with great pleasure.' Â unknown
