1930ref. 190901930 - 1933. Commercial albums. Fine. Three oblong folio commercial albums. 332 identified captions in French black and white photographs 125 x 175 mm with an additional 11 fold-out photographic panoramas. A detailed photographic record of the engineering construction of the Mole d'Escale du Verdon the albums omit the art-deco finished appointments of passenger lounges. This multi-year harbor project was planned before WWI but only begun once German war reparations began to be paid to France. The reparations financed this project. The pier was designed as a long gradual arch out into the Gironde River and incorporated the most up-to-date technology e.g. hydraulic dampers for docking ships. In conjunction with this the SNCF undertook the extension and electrification of rail connections not depicted. The photographs offer an elaborate and meticulous record of engineering work and appear to have benefited from unlimited access to the site. This would indicate official sanction but there is no record of this in the albums. Great care was taken to identify and date each of the photographs. unknown books

Old fold lines a few tiny holes and some toning previous owner's pencil margin notes. The text reads in part: "From necessity Fellow Citizens we are compelled to talk to you through the medium of Hand-Bills and Circulars the Newspaper Press of the County having been bought by the Railroads and Bondholders." The anonymous author warns fellow taxpayers their hard earned money is being plundered to finance the debts of "worthless and defaulting Rail Road Companies -- viz: The Steubenville Allegeheny Valley and Chartiers." The appeal challenges taxpayers to use their votes to elect a Commissioner and Treasurer who "will not suffer the tax to be levied or assessed." Statistics related to the debts for the cities of Pittsburgh and Allegheny as well as the county totalling $5500000 are given. Noted are roads "repudiated" in 1856 and 1857 and an estimate for ones that "will repudiate in 1858" helping to date this piece. "Will you cast your Suffrages for a Ticket pledged to enforce the collection of these Taxes. or will you rather use the power of the ballot box. to compel the Robbers who have been plundering you to surrender their ill-gotten Gains. The 1850s were an era of increasing infrastructure investments in railroads at least partially financed through taxes and bonds. The Pennsylvania Railroad chartered by the state legislature in 1846 ran its first excursion train to Pittsburgh in 1851. The Ohio & Pennsylvania Railroad chartered two years later began to use a station at Allegheny City in 1851. The two lines were connected by a bridge across the Allegheny River in 1858. ref. 3730412Pittsburgh. 1835. 12¼ x 7½ inches. One page circular previously folded and bound. A Large notched-out area to inner margin does not affect text short edge-tears else Very Good. Printed circular and subscription announcing to Pittsburgh’s citizens a meeting of the Board of Trustees to raise money to hire Gilbert Morgan the second chancellor of what is today University of Pittsburgh. Testimonials give on behalf of Morgan were made by Theodore D. Weld Dr. Miller of Princeton Rev. Breckenridge Rev. Uffold and so forth. The trustees announce: “The undersigned approve heartily of that part of Mr. Morgan’s plan which would impart a more popular cast to the Institution by enlarging the range of studies and yielding a prominent place and consideration to such as may be turned to account in active life in whatever sphere. Our citizens have had too much reason perhaps to regard it heretofore as something which stood apart in lofty seclusion from their pursuits and and sympathies. This erroneous notion will be discarded and a deep interest claimed from all in that which is designed for the common benefit of all.” “The University’s buildings along with most of its records and files were destroyed in a widespread 1845 fire that wiped out 20 square blocks of the most valuable part of Pittsburgh.” Wikipedia Unrecorded in OCLC. unknown
