1867rif. 69292London England 1867. Plain stiff paper wrappers soiled ink marks stitched. 15 x 11 cm. approx. 106 pp. of text rest blank ca. 10000 words in ink and occasionally pencil in a neat hand. The unnamed author commences three or four different stories penning a chapter or two for at least three of them. His subjects include a country house party and the interactions of the guests; a family in mourning and a solicitous guest; a young man down on his luck who forges his employer's signature on a check; etc. There are moments of humor and self-absorption by some of the characters food and drink seem to pre-occupy the author's thoughts there are curious turns of phrase and spelling aberrations. The first line of the first story introduces his main character: "My name is Nathiniel Lanyon. There's a Chirstian name for a man in my station of life." He goes on to say he was named after his grandfather who taught him how to drink "whisky of the strength of seven parts of the spirit to one of water.so I can now drink my evening comfort as strong as that with an unteared that is to say tearless eye." In another story a woman describes her turncoat friends as having been tested and their loyalty "snapped like rotten twigs." In another a young man is described as having "an head conically inclined." There are numerous ink corrections and alterations in the text. The rear pastedown has a short ink recipe for cold cream and a clipped article offering advice for brushing teeth with a combination of gin nutmeg and lemon juice. A clue to the author's identity comes on the final page of the notebook where he pens the text of an advertisement: "A dispenser to board out of the house in the country address stating terms to E.L. care of Messrs Gale & Co. Bouverie Street Fleet Street London." In the classified section of the November 9 1867 edition of the Lancet General Advertiser London: A Journal of British and Foreign Medicine George Fall: 1867 this ad appears almost verbatim: "Wanted by a General Practitioner in the country a DISPENSER; to board out of the house -- Address stating terms to E.L. care of Messrs. Gale and Co. Bouverie-street Fleet-street London." Presumably the author of these amateur sketches was himself a doctor. unknown books
1870rif. 26016UK ca1870. Half leather with elaborately decorated boards and reverse embossed floral borders in relief. All "face-edges" of the binding covers are sealed with a narrow band of gold colored foil. Near fine; occasional spot. 4to the portfolio measuring appx. 240 x 215 mm. The accomplished central watercolor illustration front cover only; measuring appx. 150 x 110 mm is taken directly from Gould's Mammals of Australia 1863 and is of the Red-tailed phasogale Phasogale calura an arboreal marsupial. The portfolio contains a 4to size blank notebook made up of 28 pp. of laid paper bound in a decorated paper wrapper. The border on the front cover and central medallion design and border of the rear cover were produced by minute cutwork and reverse embossing with modest highlights in monochromatic ink on a single sheet that was affixed to stiff boards to form the binding covers. A most attractive and remarkable survival of Victorian decorative arts; most likely from the workshop of a bookbinder with the addition of a well executed watercolor of an Australian marsupial providing a whimsical flair. The whole is executed with great skill and sophistication. There is no identification of the maker. What appears to be designed as a desk portfolio also contains a blank 4to size notebook made up of laid paper in color patterned paper wrappers. There is nothing akin to it in the 2 volume Maggs English bindings catalog of 1987or other binding references consulted. hardcover books
1850rif. 14209s.l. s.n. 18- 1850. Duodecimo ff. 4 103 14 plus other recipes loosely inserted. Morocco-grain brown calf floral ornaments blind stamped to boards fore-edges marbled blue blue marbled endpapers. An eclectic collection of manuscript recipes produced across the nineteenth-century. Written in multiple hands likely beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and ending in the 1920s this is a fascinating palimpsest of domestic life across the Victorian period. Contains cookery baking cosmetic and medicinal recipes. One of the authors frequently cites the origin of each recipe giving an insight into the bookish and social resources required to assemble such a collection in one volume. Loss to spine tips and scuffs to spine boards and corners a little rubbed. Occasional foxing to contents and some pages attached to one another in erratic ways for example with a nail or glue. Some recipes in the final gathering are upside-down- it was common to flip hand written recipe books and begin a new 'upside down' section from the rear often with tonics and medicinal cures as is the case in this book. An attractive book in very good condition considering its practical use. s.l. s.n. 18- hardcover

Good; blank margins cut-down; backed with a paper sheet of 18th century laid paper that has been glued at the perimeter on the verso; some glue stains showing. Folio letterpress illustrated broadside measuring appx. 510 x 375 mm. The engraved illustration measures appx. 120 x 190 mm. The son of John William Friso of the house of Nassau-Dietz William became stadtholder of Friesland and then later also of Groningen and of Gelderland. On March 25 1734 he married Anne of Hanover 170959 eldest daughter of George II of Great Britain. By the extinction of other branches of the Ottonians of Nassau he acquired a number of territories in Germany. In April 1747 during the War of the Austrian Succession the French invaded Dutch territory. A spontaneous popular movement arose first in Zeeland then in Holland in Utrecht and in Overijssel for the elevation of William to the stadtholdership in these provinces vacant since William IIIs death 1702 and to the ranks of captain general and admiral general. William was appointed and all his offices were made hereditary. The first man to be stadtholder of all seven provinces William IV now had more power than any of his predecessors; but he proved incompetent as a leader during his short reign. The Dutch people expected reforms to make the rule of the urban oligarchies in Holland less absolute. William made attempts to abolish the greatest abuses but when he died 1751 the most urgent problems were unresolved. The print illustrating the broadside at the head of the text celebrates his enthronement and illustrates the fealty of the colonized people of the Dutch empire. The text explains the iconography of the celebratory print and is accompanied by a 48 line poetical encomium printed in two columns at the base of the broadside. Unlocated.
