Best.-Nr. 60168G. Shaw Peel Square Printing Works. Barnsley. No date c.1900. Fscap.8vo. . pp. 26 ii; 12. Original printed wrappers with repairs to corners of some leaves and to the spine resewn some foxing but in nice condition overall. The 12-page section is bound into the centre and appears to be an add-on to the original. The figure of '120' in the title repeated on the front cover has been crossed out and '155' inserted. Having counted the recipes in both sections I can see only 107 formulae. No matter they cover a lot of ground from waterproofing umbrellas to paint for steam pipes polish for marble and varnish for baskets. The recipes for 'Removing Stains upon Hands' should not be tried at home : '. take a very small quantity of Oil of Vitriol sulphuric acid and pour it into some cold water and wash your hands in it without soap. The Dye and possibly your fingers will then come off.' Unsurprisingly COPAC does not record a copy of this little pamphlet - but it does have a record of another work printed by Shaw Barnsley - A.C. SEWARD. Syllabus of a course of twelve lectures on the earth's history : how it is written. Cambridge University Society Lectures. No date. G. Shaw, Peel Square Printing Works. Barnsley. 184612mo., First Edition thus, with several woodcut illustrations in the text, neat nineteenth century signature on front free endpaper, title and first page of text; original publisher's brown grained cloth, boards with double frame border enclosing an elaborate an elaborate lozenge all in blind, very neatly recased with new cloth backstrip to style, original gilt lettering laid down, fore-edges lightly dust-soiled else a very good, crisp copy in sympathetically restored publisher's binding. According to the English editor's Preface this scarce work is 'an adapted translation of one of the most popular treatises on French Cookery, entitled La Cuisiniere de la Campagne et de la Ville ou Nouvelle Cuisine Economique, Paris, Audot, 1846'. The success and stature of the French original is compared to that of Mrs. Rundell. It has been suggested that this is in fact a second edition of a work with a similar title published by Thomas Boys in 1825 [Bitting, p. 554; Oxford, p. 157; Wellcome III, 67]; however this would contradict the Preface, and there is no mention of such a kinship in Oxford who lists both volumes. A very nice copy of an extremely scarce work. Oxford, p.177 (recording the publisher as 'David Boyne'). Not in Cagle.

Best.-Nr. 3731940Boston: Pinkham Press 1917–1918. 22 x 14 inches printed on cardstock. Illustrated. Lightly soiled; near fine. “Our Fathers are Fighting in France.” A rare and unrecorded first World War photo-illustrated broadside documenting a little-known display of Franco-American friendship. Across America various patriotic societies often organized by women raised funds and sent baby clothes and necessities to France. These funds went to help babies orphaned by the War or to help French mothers with children whose fathers were fighting with the American solders. As one American soldier described it: “We will say for instance that this is Baby No. 4000. She wears wooden-soled shoes and half-length woolen stockings and a blue calico dress and her mother does the washing for the Sammies who are billeted out in the barn with Toto….” “Right in Touch with the Babies” in Life Magazine 1918. Here at the French Baby Fund Festival Exhibition the Boston community lent a benevolent hand and declared “May Day” to be “Baby Day” as part of a three day festival at Liberty Cottage Boston Common. The raised funds were likely funneled to the Fraternité Franco-Américaine. The broadside is printed with the colors of France and all of its text is printed in a pale lavender. unknown
