Copperplates 62 Titlepage vignette with coat of arms of Gloucester and its cathedral in background in total 370 coats of arms engraved by Ames of Bristol. Small folio linen spine with contemporary blue paper wraps. Engraved titlepage 62 plates of coats of arms. Titlepage partly torn across and repaired on back and hinge strengthened else a neat copy with only a little light freckling. There is no text or subscribers list in this version the book was sold both with and without 49 pages of text which listed and briefly described the coats of arms pictured in the plates. The arms of Gloucestershire families are derived from Sir Robert Atkins' History 1712 and a few from Rudder's New History 1779. Printed 6 per page they are alphabetical first from Atkyns up to plate 53 which has only 4 arms ending in "Yate". Then the alphabet begins again with A from Rudder but ends with "Cassey". A further volume was intended but the work was never completed. Generally attributed to Sir George Nayler born at Stroud Garter King of Arms but the Dict. Nat. Biog. xl.130 states that "it was in reality the work of one Ames an engraver at Bristol". J. Good, 159 New Bond Street paperback

ref. 53179Sudbury: G. W. Fulcher / London: Longman & Co. 1841 . Disbound original pamphlet. 6.0" x 4.0" pp.24.Clean throughout. VG. Referenced by: OCLC Online Computer Library Center :18082852 The phrase "A cheap loaf but no money to buy it or The question of the corn laws plainly considered" refers to a 19th-century political slogan and pamphlet title used during Britain's fierce national debate over the Corn Laws. The phrase captures the core argument used by protectionists those who wanted to keep the laws: they claimed that while getting rid of trade barriers might make bread cheaper it would also crash the economy and lower workers' wages so much that they still wouldn't be able to afford food. Wikipedia. George Williams Fulcher 1795-1855 was an English poet and miscellaneous writer. He carried on the business of a bookseller stationer and printer at Sudbury in Suffolk where in 1825 he issued the first number of the 'Sudbury Pocket Book' an annual which he continued to publish during his life and to the pages of which besides Fulcher himself Bernard Barton William and Mary Howitt James Montgomery and other less-known writers contributed. A selection from these contributions appeared under the title of 'Fulcher's Poetical Miscellany' in 1841 12mo reprinted in 1853. Fulcher also started in 1838 a monthly miscellany of prose and verse entitled 'Fulcher's Sudbury Journal' but this was not continued beyond the year. He made a courageous effort to treat pauperism poetically publishing 'The Village Paupers and other Poems' London 1845. 'The Village Paupers' is in the heroic couplet and betrays in almost every line the influence of Crabbe and of Oliver Goldsmith's The Deserted Village. Of the miscellaneous poems 'The Dying Child' is the best. Fulcher also published 'The Ladies' Memorandum Book and Poetical Miscellany' 1852 and following years; 'The Farmer's Day-book' which reached a sixth edition in 1854 and he was engaged on a life of Gainsborough a Sudbury man at his death on 19 June 1855. Fulcher was throughout life a diligent student particularly of Crabbe and Cowper. Boswell's Johnson was also one of his favourite books. He was a practical botanist and very sensitive to the beauties of nature. He took an active interest in local affairs being one of the magistrates of the borough of Sudbury president of the board of guardians and several times mayor. He gave much to charities. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Gregory Sudbury the townspeople closing their shops and the mayor corporation and magistrates of the borough following the burial. Sudbury: G. W. Fulcher / London: Longman & Co., 1841 . unknown
