1810réf. 20136Newburyport: W. & J. Gilman 1810. FIRST EDITION. Original calf-backed boards spine label; interior somewhat browned due to paper stock. An amazing survival. First edition though Faust’s Catechism had been printed in 1795 with a second edition in 1798. Faust 1755-1842 was a German obstetrician and writer who produced a range of texts designed at improving health amongst the general public. His “Health Catechism” Gesundheits-katechismus Zum Gebrauche in Den Schulen und Beim Häuslichen Unterrichte Bückeburg 1794 was aimed at children and used a popular question and answer format which was designed to help people – especially youth – memorize the information. Faust’s writing reflects a trend amongst some medical professionals of the early nineteenth century to conflate health and spiritual concerns where attending to the body became part of moral practice. Children here are taught to interpret care for their bodies as a moral duty reinforcing his claims with bible verses on similar topics. Notably and reflecting the growth in utilitarian ideas that saw pleasure and pain as drivers of human behavior the healthy body is a happy body and pain and unpleasant emotions signs of physical and moral disorder. According to the “Advertisement” prefacing the text “in the compilation of this work Dr. Faust's Catechism of health improved and corrected by Dr. Gregory of Edinburgh has been taken for the foundation; a few observations are omitted as being foreign to the situation and habits of society in this country; and copious additions have been made by selections from the writings of medical men of the first respectability and talents but principally from Willich’s Lectures on diet and regimen and Parkinson's Medical admonitions.” Austin 763. The interesting context of the present item is explained in a quotation from Antony Chessell’s 2009 biography of Hayward subtitled ‘one of the Two Best Read Men in England’ - the other was Macaulay subjoined to this entry. See also the entries for Hayward and Lewis in the Oxford DNB. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. Sixty lines of text. In good condition lightly aged. Folded for postage. Addressed to ‘My dear Lewis’ and signed ‘A. Hayward’. He begins by expressing regret that ‘any misapprehension has arisen from the introduction of Sir J Graham’s name in the Memorandum. It certainly was not our intention to reiterate or revive directly or indirectly any charge against anyone. Sir R. Peel Sir J. Walsham & Mr Nott were involved in the charges as well as Sir J. Graham and yourself but as you are the sole prosecutor we to confine the arrangement exclusively to you.’ He continues on the same theme with reference to ‘Sir F. Thesiger’ ‘Charles Greville’ ‘the Adjutant General Macdonald’ ‘Lord John Manners’. Postscript: ‘I told you that Ferrand expressed himself perfectly satisfied and that there is not the remotest chance of his reviving the matter.’ The subject of the letter is Tory MP William Busfeild Ferrand 1809-1889. Chessell explains: ‘Two letters by Ferrand in The Times in August 1844 accused Sir James Graham Home Secretary under Sir Robert Peel from 1841 until 1846 and George Lewis of conspiring to produce a false report designed to discredit him as chairman of the Keighley Board of Guardians. This prompted Lewis to consider legal action but many other matters intervened and the final incentive to do so was only triggered in 1847. / ‘The Queen v. Ferrand Esq. M.P.’ was due to be heard in the Hilary Term between January and March 1847 but the trial was delayed to await Ferrand’s plea. In response Lewis denied any conspiracy between himself and Graham. Abraham Hayward who was not part of Lewis’s legal team then acted as an intermediary in persuading Ferrand to retract his letters. With Hayward acting for Lewis and Lord John Manners acting for Ferrand a statement was inserted in The Times on November 18th 1847 to include a formal memorandum in which Mr. Ferrand recognised that he had acted in haste and expressed regret that he had done so.’ ‘Temple May 26’ [no year]. unknown

Catharine Drew Gilpin Faust born September 18 1947 is an American historian and was the 28th president of Harvard University the first woman to serve in that role. In 2014 she was ranked by Forbes as the 33rd most powerful woman in the world. In 1975 Faust joined the University of Pennsylvania faculty as assistant professor of American civilization. A specialist in the history of the South in the antebellum period and Civil War Faust rose to become Walter Annenberg Professor of History. She is the author of six books including Mothers of Invention: Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War for which she won both the Society of American Historians Francis Parkman Prize and the Avery O. Craven Award from the Organization of American Historians in 1997. Her works include This Republic of Suffering which was an acclaimed exploration of how the United States' understanding of death was shaped by the losses during the Civil War. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. An illuminating study of the American struggle to comprehend the meaning and practicalities of death in the face of the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War. During the war approximately 620000 soldiers lost their lives. An equivalent proportion of today's population would be six million. This Republic of Suffering explores the impact of this enormous death toll from every angle: material political intellectual and spiritual. The eminent historian Drew Gilpin Faust delineates the ways death changed not only individual lives but the life of the nation and its understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. She describes how survivors mourned and how a deeply religious culture struggled to reconcile the slaughter with its belief in a benevolent God pondered who should die and under what circumstances and reconceived its understanding of life after death. Faust details the logistical challenges involved when thousands were left dead many with their identities unknown on the fields of places like Bull Run Shiloh Antietam and Gettysburg. She chronicles the efforts to identify reclaim preserve and bury battlefield dead the resulting rise of undertaking as a profession the first widespread use of embalming the gradual emergence of military graves registration procedures the development of a federal system of national cemeteries for Union dead and the creation of private cemeteries in the South that contributed to the cult of the Lost Cause. She shows too how the war victimized civilians through violence that extended beyond battlefields from disease displacement hardships shortages emotional wounds and conflicts connected to the disintegration of slavery. Throughout the voices of soldiers and their families of statesmen generals preachers poets surgeons and nurses of northerners and southerners slaveholders and freed people of the most exalted and the most humble are brought together to give us a vivid understanding of the Civil War's most fundamental and widely shared reality. Were he alive today This Republic of Suffering would compel Walt Whitman to abandon his certainty that the real war will never get in the books. Alfred A. Knopf hardcover
