Josephus and the History of the Greco-Roman Period comprises a series of essays on the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus and on the history of the Second Temple period by many of the best-known specialists in the field. The contributions are revised versions of papers delivered at an international colloquium in memory of Professor Morton Smith that was held at San Miniato Italy in November 1992. The essays cover a broad range of historical and historiographical issues concerning the Seleucid Hasmonean Herodian and Roman periods for which the importance of Josephus - often our only extant source - can hardly be overestimated. Josephus' trustworthiness as a historian is newly investigated from various angles. Fresh light is thrown on philological literary geographical archaeological sociological and religious questions. The book includes a critical evaluation of Morton Smith's scholarly achievement. 1994Best.-Nr. 0082047New York: Carroll and Graf 1994. Loose in Folder. Very Good. Photocopy of the typescript heavily marked by an editor or perhaps the author himself inscribed by Faust first in 10/94 and then again in March 1995 “This is Matt Bruccoli’s page as J. D. is in many ways his book…Gratefully Irv Faust 3/10/95.” Housed in homemade blue cloth chemise and slipcase light wear to slipcase. Lots of marks edits etc. to the typescript probably not in Bruccoli’s hand. Faust was a well esteemed novelist and short story author. Broccoli was a prominent editor biographer and bibliographer known for his work on Hemingway and Fitzgerald especially. This novel Faust’s last book would have appealed to Bruccoli an expert on pre-WWII European culture and literature of the 1920s-30s. The hero is Hollis Cleveland a small-time African-American crook and dandy in Harlem. In 1936 he absconds with a suitcase full of cash belonging to Sol Winograd kingpin of the Harlem numbers racket. Under the alias ”Jim Dandy” a name borrowed from a stock character in a Southern minstrel show he takes a freighter to England and settles into the London high life — till he’s mistaken for an African prince and ends up dragooned into Mussolini’s army during its brutal invasion of Haile Selassie’s Ethiopia. His travels and adventures take him all over Africa…. (Carroll and Graf) unknown

Best.-Nr. B9780807112489Paperback / softback. New. From his birth in 1807 to his death in 1864 as Sherman's troops marched in triumph toward South Carolina James Henry Hammond witnessed the rise and fall of the cotton kingdom of the Old South. Planter politician and partisan of slavery Hammond built a career for himself that in its breadth and ambition provides a composite portrait of the civilisation in which he flourished. A long-awaited biography Drew Gilpin Faust's James Henry Hammond and the Old South reveals the South Carolina planter who was at once characteristic of his age and unique among men of his time. Of humble origins Hammond set out to conquer his society to make himself a leader and a spokesman for the Old South. Through marriage he acquired a large plantation and many slaves and then through shrewd management and progressive farming techniques he soon became one of the wealthiest men in South Carolina. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives and served as governor of his state. A scandal over his personal life forced him to retreat for many years to his plantation but eventually he returned to public view winning a seat in the United States Senate that he resigned when South Carolina seceded from the Union. James Henry Hammond's ambition was unquenchable. It consumed his life directed almost his every move and ultimately in its titanic calculation and rigidity destroyed the man confined within it. Like Faulkner's Thomas Sutpen Faust suggests Hammond had a ""design"" a compulsion to direct every moment of his life toward self-aggrandizement and legitimation. Hammond envisioned himself as the benevolent paternal but absolute master of his family and his slaves. But in reality neither his family his slaves nor even his own behavior was completely under his command. Hammond ardently wished to perfect and preserve the southern way of life. But these goals were also beyond his control. At the time of his death it had become clear to him that his world the world of the Old South had ended. paperback
