ref. H10829Very Good. Original typescript for Irvin Faust's collection of short stories. Unbound sheets. With 2 letters by Faust to Matthew Bruccoli both dated 1983 two years before the book's publication by Dutton both seemingly asking Bruccoli to either publish the book himself or to promote it "act as my southern agent". As Faust writes 'I'm tired of the NY ratrace and want to deal with a mensch.' Printed on rectos only. 5 of the stories that had been previously published are presented here in photocopies from their original publication. Paper clip indent to first 40 pages. Housed in cloth chemise and slipcase. From the estate of Matthew Bruccoli. unknown
1994ref. 0082047New York: Carroll and Graf 1994. Loose in Folder. Very Good. Photocopy of the typescript heavily marked by an editor or perhaps the author himself inscribed by Faust first in 10/94 and then again in March 1995 “This is Matt Bruccoli’s page as J. D. is in many ways his book…Gratefully Irv Faust 3/10/95.” Housed in homemade blue cloth chemise and slipcase light wear to slipcase. Lots of marks edits etc. to the typescript probably not in Bruccoli’s hand. Faust was a well esteemed novelist and short story author. Broccoli was a prominent editor biographer and bibliographer known for his work on Hemingway and Fitzgerald especially. This novel Faust’s last book would have appealed to Bruccoli an expert on pre-WWII European culture and literature of the 1920s-30s. The hero is Hollis Cleveland a small-time African-American crook and dandy in Harlem. In 1936 he absconds with a suitcase full of cash belonging to Sol Winograd kingpin of the Harlem numbers racket. Under the alias ”Jim Dandy” a name borrowed from a stock character in a Southern minstrel show he takes a freighter to England and settles into the London high life — till he’s mistaken for an African prince and ends up dragooned into Mussolini’s army during its brutal invasion of Haile Selassie’s Ethiopia. His travels and adventures take him all over Africa…. (Carroll and Graf) unknown

The institute was the first of its kind in the world when it was founded in 1906 and through its existence it gained much considerable relevance for the international emergence of a modern history of science and the source-based cultural studies. The institute was overseen by Karl Sudhoff the most important historian of medicine of the 20th century as was the annexed library that contained a high number of volumes sent and sometimes even dedicated to him personally. After Sudhoff's death in 1938 the institute was renamed to Karl-Sudhoff-Institut in honour of his achievements. All books from this library offered by us about 2.500 were properly withdrawn from the Leipzig University Libraries holdings and bear corresponding marks such as handwritten signatures on spines stamps on titlepages or fly leaves. In general these were added to the volumes in a very careful manner and do not or only to a very small or neglectable degree affect the aesthetical appearance of the books. - =Scrittori d'Italia. G.
