rif. 416327Softcover. Near Fine. Handwritten manuscript with multiple corrections. 26 leaves bradbound at the top written on the rectos only with one blank leaf with a clipping about the dedication affixed on the last leaf. Small nicks and tears mostly confined to the title leaf creases on the last blank leaf a little soiling on the outside leaves else near fine. The handwritten introduction indicates that this was prepared by the author from memory two days after the event. The contents of the address are facetious and satiric making much merriment at the expense of the members of the Club and lampooning their athletic endeavors their accuracy as riflemen their failures at sailing polo and other events. One particularly noteworthy passage addresses the possible invasion of the area by Canadians: "If our liberties should be threatened by the fierce and ruthless tramps or any of the 'Macks' of Montreal should cross the borders and come with their clans and bagpipes the glorious Oriflamme of the Mt. Mansfield Rifle Club would always be seen in the front ranks of every retreat - the shimmer of their rifles would flash on the highest eminence of every mountain where they would watch the movements of the invading foe. ." He continues on ranking the skills of the three socially prominent members who would later in the ceremony participate in a shooting exhibition. Cogshill then living in New York had an interesting life as an important merchant born in Virginia of a distinguished family. He worked in a local store in Loyds Viriginia and then lived at the home of his uncle Richard Garrett at New Town where some years later John Wilkes Booth fled after his assassination of Abraham Lincoln and where he was found and killed by Federal troops. Coghill's 1897 book The Family of Coghill. 1377 to 1879 presents an interesting interview that he conducted with his uncle about the event. In 1848 he sailed for California and after modest results set up in business in San Francisco as J.H. Coghill & Co. eventually considered one of the two largest commercial concerns in San Francisco. In 1857 he left the firm in the care of his brothers and went east to open a New York branch of the company. His family had some familial connections with the nearby Henry family in Virginia and at least for purposes of this oration he claimed lineage perhaps facetiously from that other famous orator Patrick Henry. A wonderfully funny send-up of a Vermont hunting club delivered by an interesting character. unknown

1917rif. 24240New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons 1917. First edition consisting of only 1500 copies far scarcer then the English issue. 8vo publisher’s original brown cloth lettered in gilt on the spine with the scarce original dustjacket preserved. 357 pp. A fine copy of the book with just a bit of mild bumping to the corners the scarce jacket is generally complete but with evidence of old repairs and some loss and separation now protected wrap-over cover and there is some light fading to some portions of the cloth where light shown through breaks in the dustjacket. VERY SCARCE IN DUSTJACKET. First Edition consisting of only 1500 copies of James’ posthumously published unfinished novel. James was writing the novel in 1914 but stopped work on it due to the outbreak of the war. With such a momentous event occurring he felt that the novel no longer represented contemporary life. The novel is a brooding story of Gilded Age America. It centers on the riches earned by a pair of dying millionaires and ex-partners Abel Gaw and Frank Betterman and their possibly corrupting effect on the people around them. 1878rif. 166501London: Wm. H. Allen & Co. 1878. The Punjab Campaign although perhaps not one of the most brilliant was nevertheless of the greatest importance in its results First edition of this uncommon and important narrative of the Second Sikh War 1848-49 combining eyewitness account with an overview of the campaign; the author served with the 24th Foot at both Chillianwalla and Gujrat and gives excellent detail of both battles. This copy is stamped on the half-title "With the Publishers' Compliments". 1790rif. AQ34015London: Printed for T. Hookham 1790. 2 91pp 1. Bound by H. J. Cooke of Warwick binder's ticket to FEP in nineteenth century gilt-tooled half-calf marbled paper boards contrasting red morocco lettering- piece. Armorial bookplates of Frederick Leigh Colvile and Julia Leigh to FEP inscribed to recto of FFEP: 'By my Grandfather / F. L. C.' occasional manuscript annotations/corrections in Colvile's hand scattered spotting. A Leigh family copy of a scarce collection of verse by James Henry Leigh 1765-1823 squire of Adlestrop Member of Parliament for Winchester and second cousin of Jane Austen. Leigh's poetry although largely melancholic in atmosphere displays a significant engagement with the stage - as well as containing a 'prologue to a private play' the volume opens with an attempt at a 'New Rosciad' intending like Churchill's decorated satire on English stage-actors to lampoon the most influential dramatists actors and actresses of the day. Leigh inherited the Adlestrop estate at just nine years old with his uncle and guardian the Rev. Thomas Leigh serving as rector of the manor. A young Jane Austen first visited alongside her mother Cassandra Leigh in 1794 and made at least two further visits to Adlestrop in the next decade. The Reverend Thomas alongside several further relatives of Cassandra Leigh was bestowed a church living - a form of guaranteed income and accommodation - by his young ward; his clerical influences on Austen frequently exposed to such arrangements are reflected in the characters of Henry Tilney Northanger Abbey and Edmund Bertram Mansfield Park both of whom are bestowed similar livings. More specifically the attendance of landscape gardener Humphry Repton 1752-1818 to the Adlestrop grounds likely resulted in his name being referenced directly in Mansfield Park with the extravagant Mr. Rushworth displaying a foolhardy ignorance of Repton's staunch principles of landscape design. This copy was for some time held in the library of the Reverend Frederick Leigh Colville 1842-1880 grandson of the author and bears his bookplate inscription and manuscript corrections. It also evidently passed through the hands of another member of the family Julia Leigh; a candidate for whom includes Julia Judith Leigh wife of the author. ESTC records copies at just two locations in the British Isles Cambridge and Oxford and a further three in North America Folger Huntington and Illinois. ESTC N25463. First edition. Quarto.
