Eccentric Purveyor of Imaginary Weapons Dr. McLean a prosperous patent medicine huckster from St. Louis here sets forth his revolutionary weapon designs in the form of a remarkably elaborate propaganda piece. Included are portable forts impregnable fortresses both fixed and floating modular metal shield blocks indestructible "Hercules Guns" rapid-fire battery guns inescapable magnetic torpedoes; 48-shot pistols and the like. Bishop James Henry Straughn 1877-1974 was ordained in the Methodist Protestant Church in 1901 and served as President of Westminster College from 1906-1910. Among his many positions and achievements he was President of The General Conference of 1936-1939 whose mission was to develop the Plan of Union among the Methodist Protestant Chichi; the Methodist Episcopal Church; and the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The Plan of Union was successfully adopted. Dr. Straughn retired in 1948 after which this privately-published volume was produced. In the Explanation Dr. Straughn states that many of his personal friends have requested copies of addresses that he delivered so he was putting together a semi-permanent record. Begins with his Curriculum Vitae through 1948 followed by historical documents related to the union and then by 8 of his addresses including his retirement address of 1948. A very interesting and rare historical document for those interested in the history of the Methodist Church in America. Pages are printed one-sided and appear to be direct copies of typewritten documents. Inscribed by Dr. Straughn to a dear friend whose last name was Pollitt. Quarto. ref. 416327Softcover. Near Fine. Handwritten manuscript with multiple corrections. 26 leaves bradbound at the top written on the rectos only with one blank leaf with a clipping about the dedication affixed on the last leaf. Small nicks and tears mostly confined to the title leaf creases on the last blank leaf a little soiling on the outside leaves else near fine. The handwritten introduction indicates that this was prepared by the author from memory two days after the event. The contents of the address are facetious and satiric making much merriment at the expense of the members of the Club and lampooning their athletic endeavors their accuracy as riflemen their failures at sailing polo and other events. One particularly noteworthy passage addresses the possible invasion of the area by Canadians: "If our liberties should be threatened by the fierce and ruthless tramps or any of the 'Macks' of Montreal should cross the borders and come with their clans and bagpipes the glorious Oriflamme of the Mt. Mansfield Rifle Club would always be seen in the front ranks of every retreat - the shimmer of their rifles would flash on the highest eminence of every mountain where they would watch the movements of the invading foe. ." He continues on ranking the skills of the three socially prominent members who would later in the ceremony participate in a shooting exhibition. Cogshill then living in New York had an interesting life as an important merchant born in Virginia of a distinguished family. He worked in a local store in Loyds Viriginia and then lived at the home of his uncle Richard Garrett at New Town where some years later John Wilkes Booth fled after his assassination of Abraham Lincoln and where he was found and killed by Federal troops. Coghill's 1897 book The Family of Coghill. 1377 to 1879 presents an interesting interview that he conducted with his uncle about the event. In 1848 he sailed for California and after modest results set up in business in San Francisco as J.H. Coghill & Co. eventually considered one of the two largest commercial concerns in San Francisco. In 1857 he left the firm in the care of his brothers and went east to open a New York branch of the company. His family had some familial connections with the nearby Henry family in Virginia and at least for purposes of this oration he claimed lineage perhaps facetiously from that other famous orator Patrick Henry. A wonderfully funny send-up of a Vermont hunting club delivered by an interesting character. unknown books

This special printing was produced as the keepsake for the limited edition of The Life and Times of Philip Klingensmith. Brev. Maj. James H. Carleton had been dispatched by his commanding general in California in the spring of 1859 to escort U.S. Paymaster Henry Prince to Salt Lake City. He was also instructed to investigate the Mountain Meadows Massacre on his way. Upon his arrival in Cedar City he interviewed as many witnesses as could be found regarding the massacre. He and his men erected a rock cairn at the site of the massacre. This report on the massacre lays the blame squarely at the feet of Mormon leaders. "But how inadequate would be punishment of a few even by death for this crime for which nearly the whole Mormon population. from Brigham Young down were more or less instrumental in perpetrating. There are other heinous crimes to be punished besides this. Martial law would at best be but a temporary expedient. Crime is found in the footsteps of the Mormon wherever they go and so the evil must always exist as long as the Mormons themselves may exist." - p.17. Arthur H. Clark Company unknown books
