1979rif. 5225Edinburgh United Kingdom: The Hogarth Press 1979. hardcover. Near Fine. N/A. The Sickle Side of the Moon: The Letters of Virginia Woolf Volume V: 1932–1935 Virginia Woolf — First Edition Publication: London The Hogarth Press 1979 Formatting: 8vo pp. xx 476. Condition Report: Near Fine. This volume presents beautifully in its original teal blue cloth bindings which remain sharp square and firm showing no significant bumping or shelf-wear. The gilt lettering and vignette tooling to the spine are exceptionally bright and unoxidised. Internally the text block is highly clean and tight with pages remaining crisp and free from foxing internal markings or major blemishes; there is only the faintest hint of dusting to the extreme top text block edge. The original dust jacket is unclipped and is similarly well-preserved exhibiting rich unfaded colour to the panels and spine with no chips or tears and is now protected in a clear archival sleeve. Catalogue Note: This is a first edition first impression of the fifth and penultimate volume of Virginia Woolf’s collected letters. It was published by The Hogarth Press the legendary publishing house established by Virginia and Leonard Woolf in 1917 maintaining the classic and uniform dust jacket design typical of the series. The volume includes a striking photographic frontispiece portrait of Virginia Woolf taken by Gisèle Freund. While individual volumes of Woolf's letters appear with some regularity on the open market locating this specific volume in such a well-preserved crisp condition complete with an unclipped and unfaded dust jacket is becoming increasingly uncommon. Spanning the years 1932 to 1935 The Sickle Side of the Moon captures Virginia Woolf during a period of immense creative output and significant personal turmoil. Now in her early fifties Woolf’s correspondence meticulously documents the difficult prolonged composition of her novel The Years alongside her candid reactions to the deaths of close friends Lytton Strachey and Roger Fry. Offering a profound and intimate window into her daily life these letters reveal the brilliant restless mind of one of the twentieth century's most essential literary voices as she navigates the complexities of her art her shifting literary perspectives and her expansive social circle.
