1927rif. 018496Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press 1927. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st Edition Blue Hardcover. Book Condition: Spine ends rubbed and slightly darkened. Corners bumped missing light foxing throughout Missing Half Title page. To the Lighthouse is at once a vivid impressionistic depiction of a family holiday and a meditation on marriage on parenthood and childhood on grief tyranny and bitterness. For years now the Ramsays have spent every summer in their holiday home in Scotland and they expect these summers will go on forever; but as the First World War looms the integrity of family and society will be fatally challenged. The novel's use of stream of consciousness reminiscence and shifting perspectives gives it an intimate poetic essence and at the time of publication in 1927 it represented an utter rejection of Victorian and Edwardian literary values. The psychology of man as a social animal First edition first impression of Woolf's psychological study of the growth of democracy in the 18th and 19th centuries seldom seen with the dust jackets. "Woolf's main theme is the contrast between the structure of society and the 'communal psychology' of Europe before and after the Revolution of 1789. His argument was that before this crucial date political power was a form of personal property. Woolf's conclusion was that by 1832 the idea of political equality had been temporarily and de facto rejected" Wilson p. 218-9. 2 vols octavo. Original orange cloth spines lettered in gilt. 1931rif. 193649London: The Hogarth Press 1931. A Bloomsbury association copy First edition second impression from the library of Roger Senhouse a Bloomsbury Group member who was the last lover of Lytton Strachey. Senhouse's thoughtful pencilled inscription on the front free endpaper is dated October 1931 the same month as the first and second impressions. Senhouse's inscription reads: "I prefer this 2nd Imp as proof that V.W. is at last recognised by the buying of now culture-snob & not culture conscious merely crowd. Is it 2 yrs or more since she began it and with what physical pains & ectasies." In a letter to Vita Sackville-West of 8 March 1927 Woolf wrote that there had been "no parties except one which Lytton gave to seduce me into liking a pink boy of his - a new pink boy - called Roger Senhouse. I got slightly tipsy and chattered at the Ivy: came home and chattered. The pink boy said he must apologise for being so dull" Letters III p. 343. Educated at Eton and Oxford Senhouse 1899-1970 was the co-owner of Secker & Warburg during the period it published George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. 1931rif. 1334The jacket is the same as for 1st print. The condition is superb. It has some foxing and some small close teard aswell as some very small loss in places on spine. What appears to be a faint blue stain under Woolf on front of cover which is hard to see well. The jacket is completely unrestored but has some foxing on inner-side of it. The book has a small stain or moisturedamage on lower part of spine which is now dry. The book also has a small inscription on inner-side of front-board and some foxing inside and on the outside of pages. The book is in great condition though and the colors are very vibrant which is really rare on this book. It is very hard to find the jacket in this good condition. Hogarth Press hardcover
