1927Best.-Nr. 129080London: Duckworth 1927. Early printing of Woolf's first novel. Octavo original cloth. Very good in the rare original dust jacket which has been restored. Uncommon in the original jacket. Woolf began work on The Voyage Out by 1910 and had finished an early draft by 1912. The novel had a long and difficult gestation; it was not published until 1915 as it was written during a period in which Woolf was especially psychologically vulnerable. She suffered from periods of depression and at one point attempted suicide. The resultant work contained the seeds of all that would blossom in her later work: the innovative narrative style the focus on feminine consciousness sexuality and death. Writing in 1926 E. M. Forster described it as ". a strange tragic inspired book whose scene is a South America not found on any map and reached by a boat which would not float on any sea an America whose spiritual boundaries touch Xanadu and Atlantis". Reviewing the book a decade earlier he wrote this: "It is absolutely unafraid. Here at last is a book which attains unity as surely as Wuthering Heights though by a different path. 1927Best.-Nr. 018496Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press 1927. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st Edition Blue Hardcover. Book Condition: Spine ends rubbed and slightly darkened. Corners bumped missing light foxing throughout Missing Half Title page. To the Lighthouse is at once a vivid impressionistic depiction of a family holiday and a meditation on marriage on parenthood and childhood on grief tyranny and bitterness. For years now the Ramsays have spent every summer in their holiday home in Scotland and they expect these summers will go on forever; but as the First World War looms the integrity of family and society will be fatally challenged. The novel's use of stream of consciousness reminiscence and shifting perspectives gives it an intimate poetic essence and at the time of publication in 1927 it represented an utter rejection of Victorian and Edwardian literary values. 1931Best.-Nr. 141454London: The Hogarth Press 1931-39. The psychology of man as a social animal First edition first impression of Woolf's psychological study of the growth of democracy in the 18th and 19th centuries seldom seen with the dust jackets. "Woolf's main theme is the contrast between the structure of society and the 'communal psychology' of Europe before and after the Revolution of 1789. His argument was that before this crucial date political power was a form of personal property. Woolf's conclusion was that by 1832 the idea of political equality had been temporarily and de facto rejected" Wilson p. 218-9. 2 vols octavo. Original orange cloth spines lettered in gilt. With dust jackets. Extremities rubbed and gently bumped marks to edges foxing to vol. II; jackets unclipped chips and short closed tears to extremities panels toned vol. II foxed: a very good set in like jackets. Luedeking A27 & A31; Woolmer 278. hardcover
1931Best.-Nr. 1334The jacket is the same as for 1st print. The condition is superb. It has some foxing and some small close teard aswell as some very small loss in places on spine. What appears to be a faint blue stain under Woolf on front of cover which is hard to see well. The jacket is completely unrestored but has some foxing on inner-side of it. The book has a small stain or moisturedamage on lower part of spine which is now dry. The book also has a small inscription on inner-side of front-board and some foxing inside and on the outside of pages. The book is in great condition though and the colors are very vibrant which is really rare on this book. It is very hard to find the jacket in this good condition. Hogarth Press hardcover
