1813rif. 3644London: B.R. Howlette / John Murray 1813. Second edition. Good. 8vo. 2 130 pp. Printed in Greek throughout on fine paper. Contemporary English red diced russia calf rubbed and worn tooled in blind outer frame of gilt palmette rolls all edges gilt drab endpapers. Front endpaper waterstained; second blank leaf with paper flaw; outer margins of final pages darkened from turn-ins. With faults and priced accordingly. THE ONLY KNOWN ILLUSTRATIONS BY MRS. LAVINIA FORSTER. Our copy bears learned MS annotations in Greek and Latin. Beautifully printed in a Greek font created especially for William Bulmer by William Martin. Dibdin described the 1802 first edition as an "elegant work that confers great credit on the printer." Our copy belongs to the second edition which was printed in the same Greek font and retains the 20 fine engraved head- and tailpiece vignettes designed by Lavinia Banks Forster 1774-1858 wife of the present editor Edward Foster. Two of the vignettes are signed in absolutely miniscule lettering "Publ. by W. Miller Old Bond Street 1802." Mrs. Lavinia Banks Forster was the only child of the sculptor Thomas Banks and his wife Elizabeth. She married the Reverend Edward Forster in 1799 and from 1815 lived in Paris with her husband who was at that time Chaplain to the British Embassy. There they provided a social center for artists. Her lively and fully accomplished illustrations for her husband's Anacreon represent the only published examples by her that we have been able to trace. "Few of Anacreon's works survive but those that do focus on wine love homosexual and heterosexual and the overall pleasures of the legendary Roman symposium. Anacreon used various techniques in his writings including self-deprecation and irony. The collection of miscellaneous Greek poems from the Hellenistic Age and beyond known as the Anacreontea was 'mistakenly labeled' with Anacreon's name" see William and Mary Law Library online exhibit. The annotator of our copy was one George Houstoun on title: "Ex libris Georgii Houstoun." Given the lavishness of the binding and the fact that the book itself was printed on fine paper perhaps this individual was George Houstoun 1743-1815 4th Laird of Johnstone Renfrew Scotland. Subsequently signed in pencil inside the lower cover: "R. Bradford." Dibdin Greek and Latin Classics vol. I pp. 266-267 1802 edition. See DNB under Edward Forster. B.R. Howlette / John Murray unknown

1556rif. 049815Paris: Robertum Stephanum Guil. Morelium Henri Estienne; Robert Estienne; Guillaume Morel 1556. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. In a makeshift binding of bonded or simulated leather with added plain endpapers. Very good or better internally with a touch of chipping to a few page edges very minor browning to edges heavier with some discoloration to Greek title page. 54 blank 122 blank. With both blanks at D2 and H6 and two more added from a previous binding. Page edges gilt. Adams A1003. Bound with the Latin version first usually found the other way around. The first edition of Anacreon was published by Henri Estienne his first work as a publisher in 1554 in a Latin edition and then a Greek edition likely printed by Morel with which it is usually bound. Like the 1554 edition this is set in Claude Garamond's "grecs du roi" type and thought to be more likely printed by Morel than Henri's father Robert. Little is known of the Anacreon manuscript Henri ran into it around 1551 and translated it into Latin. It's publication caused a sensation of playful Anacreontic imitations in Europe. Size: Octavo 8vo. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Poetry. Inventory No: 049815. Robertum Stephanum, Guil. This is a very attractive copy of the first printing of an anthology of French versions of classical poetry described by Cohen-de Ricci as "one of the most elegantly illustrated books of the 18th century." Charles Eisen 1720-78 was Louis XV's court painter as well as drawing master to Madame de Pompadour. Bryan says that "almost all the important books published in France in his time contain his exquisite plates" which "he engraved with a light point and with striking originality." He "took his inspirations direct from nature but added something of the ideal after the manner of Watteau and Boucher." The text contains biographies of and works by four important Greek poets: Anacreon sixth century B.C. Sappho b. ca. 612 B.C. Bion third century B.C. and Moschus second century B.C. The binding here is a perfect example of the kind of handsomely done French classical work produced for an extended period under the name of Chambolle. A rough contemporary of and certainly the equal in technique to binders like Trautz Marius Michel père Lortic and Cuzin the elder Chambolle served his apprenticeship under Hippolyte Duru and later formed a partnership with him as is clear from the stamped signature on our volume. Chambolle's son continued the business when his father retired in 1898 and in her "Modern Bookbindings" Sarah Prideaux says of her contemporary "Chambolle most worthily continues the traditions associated with the name of his father. . . . To him are confided the classics of former times which he clothes in the styles appropriate to them keeping to a simplicity of ornamentation which reveals great taste and feeling for composition.".
