Illustrated in colour throughout. A fine copy. The entire print-run was made up of 75 numbered copies for sale of which 58 perished and 25 presentation copies for the publisher. Produced in the style of Ed Ruscha's Twentysix Gasoline Stations VARIOUS NEW YORK STOREFRONTS publishes 48 images in their original size and format in this limited edition print run of 75 hand-numbered copies. The unknown photographer using Kodachrome shot pharmacies cinemas drugstores liquor stores and restaurants in and around Manhattan. Kodachrome was Kodak's first commercially viable colour film. The photographs date from between 1947 and 1952 and were re-discovered over half a century later in a New York fleamarket. ref. 10333Vernacular photography. 1948-1952. 57 Kodachrome colour prints each stamped in blue ink 'This is a Kodachrome print made by Eastman Kodak Company' specifying the date taken with US patent office copyright all approx 7.5 x 11cm 3 x 4 1/4in with rounded corners. Printed from Kodachrome film- Kodak's first commercially viable colour film available to the general public developed in the late 1930s- these fascinating images portray post-war Manhattan and Brooklyn shop fronts. Not only was Kodachrome film uncommon it needed to be sent back to New York for development and was very expensive costing $5 per roll. Considering that the minimum wage at the time was just 25 cents per hour $5 was almost half a week's work. The images include pharmacies liquor stores clothes shops cinemas and general stores. The dispassionate composition and documentary nature of the photos suggest a commercial project possibly a portfolio of aluminium framing of shop fronts and windows or neon lighting or script signage. However it is impossible to read the photographs without thinking of the cool gaze of Ed Ruscha the cumulative narrative of sparsely populated urban landscapes observed without comment or judgement. Passing cars are reflected in the glazed fronts of the shops a man in shirtsleeves with his back to the camera leans on the bar of a diner a paper menu has keeled over behind a flower arrangement in a cabinet display but the signs of life and movement only emphasise the static qualities of the images; high streets captured in the moment of becoming bright and metallic and commercial in the post war era. L'intento dell'autore di questo saggio è di mettere sotto gli occhi del lettore un lungo excursus di illustri uomini di pensiero (scienziati, filosofi, scrittori, storici, poeti) del mondo antico, moderno e contemporaneo fino ai nostri giorni, per concludere alla fine che nessuno di loro può menar vanto di essere stato del tutto originale e creativo, senza che mai abbia sentito il bisogno di rifarsi a qualche suo predecessore, o per ispirarvisi o per imitarlo. Ciò è quanto ha sostenuto il poeta greco Bacchilide, il quale, coinvolto anche lui nello stesso illecito, si schivò dicendo che è cosa rarissima trovare uno scrittore che nelle sue opere sia stato assolutamente originale, perché anche il più originale degli autori ruba frasi, idee, trame, versi, battute. Hanno preso qualcosa da altri addirittura nomi come Marziale, Manzoni, Dickens, Goethe, Salgari, Camus, Cartesio, Ungaretti, Pirandello, Swift, Sterne, Luther King, Coleridge. Essi stessi hanno ammesso di aver plagiato...
