Quando, nel 1323, i sette Tolosani fondarono il Concistori del Gai Saber per dare nuovo impulso alla tradizione lirica dell'Occitania, il canto trobadorico sopravviveva come oggetto di culto, modello di ars dictandi, ma la sua stagione creativa era da tempo conclusa; anche se, prima di spegnersi nei territori che ne avevano visto la splendida fioritura, quella poesia aveva trasmesso la sua eredità alle più importanti culture d'Europa. Un lascito ancora vitale nelle varie letterature nazionali, mentre l'affermarsi del francese come lingua egemone e la conseguente, irreversibile riduzione degli idiomi del Midi, fin dal XV secolo, al rango di patois hanno fortemente limitato il successo dei tentativi di riscatto occitanico, iniziati già nel Cinquecento e proseguiti fino ai giorni nostri con un momento di fulgore, legato alla personalità di Frédéric Mistral e al cenacolo dei félibres, nella Provenza della seconda metà dell'Ottocento.
