1969réf. 18853Los Angeles: Locare Research Group. Very Good in Very Good dj. First Edition. Hardcover. good solid copy top front corner bumped; jacket lightly soiled and a little age-toned minor wrinkling near top of front panel. B&W photographs facsimiles INSCRIBED "To Sydney sic Solow" and SIGNED by the author on the title page. Essentially a "films-of-Mary Pickford" chronicle but limited to only those films in which she "appeared as a comedienne either as the principal actress or in a supporting role" for the Biograph Company from 1909 through 1912; the illustrations consist primarily of reproductions of "Biograph Bulletins" the company's trade ads and frame blow-ups from the films themselves. "During the almost three years that Mary Pickford was with the Biograph Company she averaged at least one film a week. Most of her roles were dramatic and quite often she played the part of an Indian maiden. D.W. Griffith however recognized her ability as a comedienne and whenever he had a suitable story cast her in that manner. Much has been said of Mary's subsequent world-renown as a dramatic motion picture star but rarely has her talent as a comedienne been given the attention it warrants." The inscribee was Sidney P. Solow longtime head of Consolidated Film Industries one of Hollywood's major film laboratories back when Hollywood had film laboratories. The author was an important early figure in film preservation largely responsible for the restoration of films from the Paper Print Collection at the Library of Congress. Signed by Author . c.1969. B&W photographs Joint reminiscences of the early days of filmmaking by two veteran cinematographers whose "careers span the crucial period from the beginning to the consolidation of the Hollywood industry after the introduction of sound. From the personal stories of the two men giving in alternating chapters with a charming cross-cutting effect emerges an intimate account of the infant industry: the ruthless commercial piracy taken for granted by all the attempt by a small group of men to monopolize the making of pictures and the methods used by the independent companies to survive. Illustrated with many working scenes from early studios and stills from the authors' personal archives." Both men entered the film business in its infancy: Balshofer with the Lubin Company in Philadelphia in 1905 with Miller following soon after as Balshofer's then 14-year-old assistant! . 1920réf. 126251N.p.: N.p. 1920. Original Art-Nouveau style illustration of actress Bebe Daniels painted on pressboard circa early 1920s noted as starring in "Adam and Eve" with Jack Holt. The only two films starring both Daniels and Holt are "Ducks and Drakes" 1921 and "North of the Rio Grande" 1922. A beautifully executed illustration of the young actress likely as lobby art for a silent film theater. Bebe Daniels was a noted actress singer dancer writer and producer who appeared in over 230 films over her 50 year career in film. With cracking across image not affecting visibility; very good plus. A press photo of the cabin at Matchless Mine in Leadville Colorado where the body of Baby Doe Tabor was found. Tabor had lived destitute in the mining shack for nearly three decades and had frozen to death after a heavy snowstorm. Her life before that however had been legendary. Tabor born Elizabeth McCourt 1854-1935 grew up in poverty but came to be one of the wealthiest women in the mining West known for her looks and expensive dress. Her second husband was "Silver King" Horace Tabor a prospector businessman and politician who was nearly thirty years her senior. The couple lived in luxury in Denver from their marriage in 1883 until 1893 when the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act collapsed the silver market and caused the Panic of 1893 and their fortune was lost. Horace Tabor died a few years later and Baby shortly moved into the shack at Matchless Mine which had previously belonged to her husband. The rise and fall of the Tabors inspired the 1932 movie Silver Dollar and 1956 opera The Ballad of Baby Doe. ACME Newspictures unknown books

1934réf. 141211934. Boston Evening Transcript November 30 1934 reports the immediate aftermath of the gun battle that killed George "Baby Face" Nelson born Lester Gillis and mortally wounded federal agents Samuel P. Cowley and Herman E. Hollis. Published three days after the November 27 Battle of Barrington and four months after John Dillinger was killed in Chicago the issue records the final phase of the federal campaign against the Dillinger gang and the rapidly intensifying pursuit of Nelson's widow Helen Gillis. Nelson a bank robber and Dillinger associate killed three federal agents during his criminal career more FBI agents in the line of duty than any other individual. Boston Evening Transcript. Boston Massachusetts. November 30 1934. Front page coverage continues onto page two under the headline "No Quarter to Young Widow of 'Baby Face.'" The article reports the search for Helen Gillis following Nelson's death: ".Federal agents today as they hunted Mrs. Helen Gillis diminutive widow of George 'Baby Face' Nelson leader of the rapidly diminishing remnants of the gang of the late John Dillinger." It further describes efforts to locate Nelson associate John Paul Chase and John Hamilton stating that authorities sought men believed connected with "a machine-gun battle at Barrington in which Inspector Samuel P. Cowley and Special Agent Herman E. Hollis perished in the Government's drive against the nation's public enemies." Another passage places Nelson's death directly within the succession of killings that dismantled the Dillinger circle: "Government agents stood guard at the morgue where Nelson's body lay on the same slab that recently held John Dillinger." The report also states "Federal Agents believe Mrs. Nelson loaded guns for the outlaws in the fight with Cowley and Hollis." The headline's "No Quarter" language arose amid particularly aggressive press coverage of the search for Helen Gillis who had been present with Nelson and John Paul Chase during the Barrington encounter. Nelson died from his wounds on the evening of November 27; Hollis died during the gun battle and Cowley died early the following morning. Gillis remained sought by federal authorities until her arrest on November 29 making this November 30 issue nearly contemporaneous with the end of the manhunt. Newspapers cast her as a female counterpart to the highly publicized "public enemies" pursued during the Dillinger era while federal authorities ultimately prosecuted her for offenses connected with harboring Nelson rather than killing her during the search. Scattered foxing and tears with minor paper loss around the edges; overall very good condition. Front page contemporary reporting on the deaths at Barrington and the federal pursuit of Helen Gillis at the close of the Dillinger and Nelson manhunts. unknown books
1948réf. 17720Denver: Colorado: Denver Public Schools Board of Education 1948-52 A fascinating look at education in America during the early years of the Baby Boom. Seven brochures 9 x 6 in. folded. The brochures are as follows: Where Will I Go to School September 1952; O.J. Goldrick Would Be Surprised May 1952; Some Very Important People April 1952; There's More to Reading Than Meets the Eye April 1949; two copies of Schools Must Follow the Moving Vans April 1948; They're Already Knocking at Our Doors! April 1948. Printed in black and one color each with vignettes and maps of the Denver area. The text of There's More to Reading Than Meets the Eye is attributed to A. Helen Anderson and the illustrations to Hero L. Conesny. Some toning to a couple brochures. Contemporary ink signature of Carol Weale a lifelong Denver resident and educator in each brochure. Contemporary ink marking to one brochure. Still a near-fine set of rare brochures. These brochures were issued as the postwar baby boom hit Denver and the rest of the country. Twice as many children were born in the city in 1950 than in 1940 10440 children compared to 5462 according to the Where Will I Go to School brochure. The population of Denver also increased by nearly a third between 1940 and 1950 going from about 322000 people to almost 416000. The population increase strained Denver infrastructure requiring the installation of "thousands of new water taps and miles of new water mains" as well as "thousands of new telephones gas and electric meters…and thousands of new homes on the tax rolls" Where Will I Go to School. Denver public schools were pushed to capacity by the flood of new students and these brochures address the efforts of the Denver school board to increase school capacity and keep schools staffed. The brochures also address literacy and changing educational standards between generations see There's More to Reading Than Meets the Eye. The O.J. Goldrick brochure refers to a Denver folk hero who was the city's first schoolteacher and helped establish early infrastructure like the first library Sunday school and newspaper and wonders whether he would be surprised by Denver's recent growth.
