1934ref. List28131New York City: ACME Newspictures 1934. Photograph measuring 8 ⅛ x 6 ¼ inches. With caption date stamp manuscript and later sticker verso. With cracking across image not affecting visibility; very good plus. A press photo of the cabin at Matchless Mine in Leadville Colorado where the body of Baby Doe Tabor was found. Tabor had lived destitute in the mining shack for nearly three decades and had frozen to death after a heavy snowstorm. Her life before that however had been legendary. Tabor born Elizabeth McCourt 1854-1935 grew up in poverty but came to be one of the wealthiest women in the mining West known for her looks and expensive dress. Her second husband was "Silver King" Horace Tabor a prospector businessman and politician who was nearly thirty years her senior. The couple lived in luxury in Denver from their marriage in 1883 until 1893 when the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act collapsed the silver market and caused the Panic of 1893 and their fortune was lost. Horace Tabor died a few years later and Baby shortly moved into the shack at Matchless Mine which had previously belonged to her husband. The rise and fall of the Tabors inspired the 1932 movie Silver Dollar and 1956 opera The Ballad of Baby Doe. ACME Newspictures unknown books
