ill., br.

1778Best.-Nr. 009983Vienna 1778 Folio approx. 33 x 21 cm 4 leaves. Without binding backed with gray paper. Bilingual text printed throughout in parallel columns German and Polish each page headed by an ornamental typographic border; large woodcut headpiece of the Habsburg double-headed imperial eagle beneath the archducal crown to title page with historiated initials opening each principal section. Extremities frayed; central horizontal generally toned. A rare imperial counter-proclamation issued by Maria Theresa during the War of the Bavarian Succession 1778-79 addressed to "all and every one of our vassals and subjects of our hereditary lands of high and low estate" currently serving Frederick II of Prussia in military civil or court capacities or possessing goods or property within Prussian territory. The text recites the circumstance provoking the edict: Frederick's invasion of the hereditary Kingdom of Bohemia the previous July "under some groundless pretext" his subsequent incursion into incorporated provinces "in the midst of peace in an unfriendly manner" and his own printed Avocatoria of 8 July recalling all Prussian subjects from foreign service on pain of disgrace and confiscation. In direct retaliation Maria Theresa issues an equivalent mandate: all her vassals and subjects in Prussian military civil or court service or holding estates in Prussian lands are commanded within two months of publication to quit that service and territory without delay and present themselves to the appropriate Habsburg authority where they are assured of continued imperial favor and employment according to their qualifications; those who fail to comply are threatened with the empress's utmost disgrace and confiscation of all their goods within her dominions. A further clause promises compensation from the proceeds of confiscated Prussian-held property to loyal subjects who suffer losses through the Berlin court's own avocatoria. Notably printed with facing German and Polish texts throughout the broadsheet was evidently intended for simultaneous circulation among both the empress's German-speaking hereditary subjects and the newly annexed Polish-speaking population of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria ceded to Austria in the First Partition of Poland 1772 and named among Maria Theresa's titles on the opening leaf. As such the piece is an interesting artifact of Habsburg administrative practice toward its newly absorbed Polish territories produced amid the diplomatic and military tit-for-tat between Vienna and Berlin that characterized the Bavarian Succession conflict. unknown
