1884réf. 49469Chicago: By the author 1884. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Blind-embossed brown cloth with gilt lettering. 167pp. Tan floral endpapers. Very good. Binding lightly shellacked a common turn-of-the-century practice thus glossy; internally tight and near fine; abrasion near foot of spine. First edition tight and nice of this slim tariff history by the Chicago journalist born 1829 who served as tariff editor of the "Chicago Inter Ocean" back when tariffs were a contentious issue and debates raged. Interestingly this hails from the collection of William B. Allison 1829-1908 powerful Republican politico who as U.S. senator from Iowa 1873-1908 was one of the "big four" who controlled the Senate; as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for most of those years he championed tariff legislation and co-authored the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. Early 20th century bookplate on front flyleaf notes: "This book is part of Allison Memorial Collection Gift of Mrs. Jennie A. Brayton" and until deaccessioned was part of Allison's non-circulating collection at his hometown public library across the street from his Dubuque residence. By the author hardcover
