The poem is composed of eight line stanzas grouped into 20 cantos of varying length. The poem was immensely successful throughout Europe and over the next two centuries various sections were frequently adapted as individual storylines for madrigals operas plays ballets and masquerades; scenes from the poem were also depicted in paintings and frescoes. 1817ref. 007975London: Henry Colburn 1817. First edition. Three Quarters Morocco. Marbled pastedown on boards. Near Fine. 4to. 30.5 by 27 cm. xviii 2 368 pp. 28 hand-colored aquatint plates of which one is a half-title page another is a double paged and folding panorama plate of The Battle of Waterloo; plus two folding maps. The plate count given in the book's plate description is 30 and this includes the maps. Tooley 336. Abbey Life 372. Cohn Cruikshank 580. Missing as typical View of Brussels but with "Flight of Bonaparte". Rouse was responsible for almost all of the plates with Cruikshank the artist for the large folding plate depicting the Battle of Waterloo and the frontis plate which contains portraits of the leading generals. Rouse though had a hand in the printing of these as well. Condition: Rubbing along the joints on the cover with a touch of rawness in the very upper reach of the front hinge but overall a highly attractive three quarter red morocco binding with raised bands gilt lettering and ruled and dotted decoration on the spine. Scattered light soiling within and the typical quotient of offsetting but mostly clean. The Cruikshank Waterloo plate has smudgy margins but a good amount of this can be removed with a simple eraser if one wishes to make the effort -- we did test this. The large folding map has fold tears with one irregularly bordered tear. The whole map we would note is present. Henry Colburn unknown
ref. 005029Esslingen and München: Verlag von J. F. Schreiber. Hardcover. Front board: pictorial paper pastedown. Cloth spine. Near Fine. An exceptionally clean and bright copy of this juvenile audience plate book depicting geography and domestic and work life. N.d. circa 1870s. Small folio. 32 by 21.5 cm. 5 7 1 pp followed by 30 double-sided hand-colored plates. Each plate measures 32 by 40 cm. The plates depict the home rural and urban the city the farm a vineyard tools a church interior a city market a winter skating scene a mountain landscape a railroad station a forest etc. The point was to educate children about the features of all these places and spaces and incidentally impart the vocabulary -- the many nouns -- associated with them. Nowadays the plates are simply wonderfully decorative with their bright chromolithography and evocation of a lost world. And the great Meggendorfer was responsible for three of the plates! Light wear to the cover. One of the plates has a minor closed tear by its fold. But as we indicated an unusually appealing copy. Verlag von J. F. Schreiber hardcover
1821ref. 003813London: R. Ackermann 1821. First edition. Contemporary Full Morocco. Very Good. 4to. 34 by 29 cm. vi 2 286 pp. Hand-colored title vignette and 48 hand-colored engraved plates. The plates capture the poetic beauty of the legendary lake region exquisitely. TEG. Moderate rubbing to contemporary red morocco along edges faint dampstain markings and a few other scuffs and other indicia of wear but still a very handsome binding. Dampstaining to the edges of the endpapers. Foxing of a few early leaves as well as the final ones. Faint dampstaining affecting the margins of perhaps a dozen plates and also visible in the fore-edge when the pages are fanned. However most leaves are clean and the plates themselves come off generally as quite fresh and vibrant. R. Ackermann unknown
1915ref. 002601Berlin: Hermann Hillger Verlag 1915. First Edition. Paper pastedown on boards. Very Good. 8vo. Unpaginated with 25 leaves a color plate on each of them not counting title leaf. The color plate is on the recto and the facing verso contains accompanying verse. The artwork bears the style of a darkish late impressionism as it moved towards an Expressionist sensibility. As not everything was by the same hand there is some diversity of style coloring literalism of course. Included is an original subscription or order form for the book. It would appear that the book was sold in part or perhaps entirely through direct sales spearheaded by the Crown Princess and conducted by aristocratic women at least in some measure. Light soiling to the cover pastedown. Scattered light soiling within. One gathering is partly loose. Hermann Hillger Verlag unknown
1917ref. 333n.p. England 1917. Very good internally but vellum heavily soiled and toned boards bowed contents clean with some light finger-soiling. Attractive manuscript children's book filled with watercolor illustrations. A whimsical story in verse about a carefree itinerant fellow and his dog set in the early twentieth century wandering the towns of southern England before finding and then losing untold riches in Canterbury - and learning that time and leisure are more valuable than money. This book appears to be unpublished as we trace no printed version of any variation of this title by this author or illustrators. Oblong 4to. 7 leaves. Clearly a work of love as it is bound in full vellum with gilt lettering and marbled endpapers.
