ref. 11581Title in Vol. 1 & frontis. in Vol. 2 printed in color. 55 double-page woodcut illus. 29.5; 29.5 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo orig. semi-stiff wrappers title-slips new stitching. Osaka Edo & Kyoto: Yamatoya ShirÅsaburÅ 大和屋四郎三郎 et al. 1823. First edition of this beautifully illustrated guide to making ehon 画本 or picture books. It is rare especially outside Japan and no copy is found in WorldCat. The work opens onto early modern printing culture book distribution and the popular pleasures of reading and consumption. As its title suggests it is a handbook tebiki 手引ã for producing ehon 画本 or "picture books." Ehon covers any book in which illustration plays an important role from fine-art portfolios to illustrated fiction poetry collections travel guides and popular books such as kusazÅshi. Together with the rise of commerce and urban life and a popular fervor for pleasure reading ehon became one of the most influential forms of printed content. The illustrations are alive with humor. The subjects include cheeky scenes of everyday life "behind the scenes" bribery between merchants and politicians armies sojourning across the countryside and festivals. There are also fictional scenes from the classics such as the sage conversing with fish for wisdom along with depictions of nature the changing seasons and personified animals such as traveling frogs. Housewives blacksmiths and Edo contractors are shown at their crafts. Each page carries a short prose text some in the lyrical structure of tanka. The result is an invitation into the imaginative world of early modern Japan carefully portrayed to highlight its essence. The illustrators are of particular interest. The first volume was illustrated by Niwa TÅkei 1760-1822 a prolific Osaka-based painter whose artistic range extended from landscape and refined painting to comic and satirical drawings. He died in the winter of 1822 and his pupil Suga ShÅhÅ 1790-1851 completed the second volume. On the colophon leaf in the second volume we learn the name of the carver: JuryÅken 壽良軒. Very good copy. Unimportant mostly marginal worming carefully repaired. unknown

ref. 37782London: Raphael Tuck & Sons n.d. Hardcover. Fair. Hardcover. A surprisingly scarce title. No date but the ownership signature on the free front endpaper is dated Christmas 1908. This charming collection of illustrated fairy tales including Beauty and the Beast Tom Thumb. Snow-White and Rose-Red and Rapunzel among others has fortunately or unfortunately been well used and read. The quite worn covers are present but detached and the spine is missing. Tears to first couple of front endpapers and soiling and spots to many of the text pages. Nonetheless a sweet survivor of this well loved book. Measures 7.5 x 10.25 inches. 72 pages. CHILD/012925. ref. 55437Sarajevo: Izdanje glavnog odbora AFŽ-a za Bosne i Hertsegovine Državna štamparija 1945. Quarto 25 × 20 cm. Original staple-stitched pictorial wrappers by Mica Todorović; 35 1 pp. One double page reproducing drawings by Ismet Mujezinović. Light soil and foxing to wrappers else very good. An illustrated election brochure from Sarajevo promoting Tito the communist revolutionary and WWII partisan leader to head Yugoslavia. The volume was published by the Women's Antifascist Front AFŽ in anticipation of the first election with the participation of women voters in 1945. In the opening text of the volume Tito addresses Yugoslav women "On November 11th you the women of Yugoslavia who have earned the right to solve all internal political and economic problems on an equal footing with men will have your say. And I do not doubt your word. I have no doubt that it will correspond to the heroic struggle and heroic actions of women during this war." The brochure includes political agitational speeches by female communist and antifascist political leaders such as Mitra Mitrović 1912-2001 who was the founding member of the Women's Antifascist Front in 1942 and later the Minister of Education of communist Yugoslavia as well as by Lepa Perović 1911-2000 a communist activist partisan leader during WWII and later a member of the Yugoslav parliament. Perović's essay is accompanied with photo-illustrations of women taking part in the partisan war effort. Nadžida Hadžić 1906-2001 the president of Women's Antifascist Front contributed a longer article on the post-war activities of the AFŽ members in sheltering the homeless elderly and orphaned children in the aftermath of WWII. A double page spread reproducing drawings of war atrocities by Ismet Mujezinović poems about the victory of the partisans and a satirical article about Tito's opposition close the volume. The wrapper designer Bosnian Expressionist painter Mica Todorović 1900-1981 is often called the "first lady of Yugoslav art" because she was the first woman to graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb 1926 and the first female member of the Bosnian Academy of Science and Arts. Part of the communist-leaning Zagreb Zemlja 1929-1935 artist collective and a member of the communist party since 1932 she was imprisoned at the Stara Gradiška concentration camp during WWII for her political beliefs. After liberation she used a cycle of her drawings of the conditions at the camp to testify for the State Commission of War Crimes in Belgrade becoming the first and only artist whose work was used as evidence by the Commission. The volume seems to have been sent to the AFŽ members by mail in anticipation of this historic election with the front wrapper indicating that postage has been paid. As of November 2025 KVK OCLC show no copies in North America. unknown

A Large Paper Copy. Cleveland Collections 557; Dunthorne 6; Sitwell "Great Flower Books" p. 67 69; Nissen BBI 18. ◆One plate with minor repair to fore-edge margin another with tiny rust hole not touching image half a dozen plates with insignificant smudges made during the printing process other trivial imperfections but A VERY FINE COPY clean fresh and wide-margined in a flawless binding. This is a major work of 18th century botany describing more than 2800 species of plants found in Italy's Piedmont region illustrating 237 previously unknown specimens and--crucially--classifying them all according to the new Linnean system becoming one of the first regional botanicals to use that taxonomy; as a bonus our copy comes in a particularly appropriate and charming binding with prominent botanical design elements. "Flora Pedemontana" was the chief work of Italian physician Carlo Allioni 1728-1804 professor of botany at the University of Turin and director of its natural history cabinet and botanical garden. The illustrations were drawn and engraved by the botanical garden's resident artist Francesco Peyroleri and his son Pietro. Our flora is also an important source of information on Alpine flowers. The modern binding is by an artisan who was proclaimed the "Grande Dame of French bookbinding" by the journal "Art & Métiers du Livre." Annie Boige trained at the Estienne School and at the Vésinet Applied Art Workshop before establishing her atelier in 1985. An art bookbinder she is noted for her monochrome color schemes and her use of beautiful leathers and vegetal materials a felicitous choice here. Michael Briolus unknown
